I wouldn't worry about it ... your old software will still run with no problems, it will not run on other PC's *IF* you choose to use the "Trusted Platform Module" part of Longhorn ... from what the article clearly says, this is basically an extended API which sits over Windows, thats it really. Also, Linux users should rejoice, the chip doesn't block installation of Linux as previously thought ... Microsoft does listen after all.

Never-the-less, the whole thing will fall through, people are getting pissed off at Microsoft, and the fact that they are selling Windows XP at $5 per copy to company's that are starting to switch to Linux just shows how threatened they feel.

If people don't like the system and MS start using it for world domination then they will stop buying that hardware and in turn, the chip will be removed. Motherboard manufacturers aren't going to keep adding the chips if people aren't buying them. Heh, it worked for Gandhi, I'm sure we can do it too.

Like I've been telling you for years...
for all of you Windows XP users to keep a legal install of Windows
YOU WILL HAVE NO CHOICE but to use TCPA (LONGHORN)

unless you were smart enough to keep a legally licensed copy of Windows98 or ME (and all the patches).

The more you see, the more you know.

TCPA isn't bad, infact its a bloody fantastic idea that alot of companies are now starting to use.
Anyone who owns a Pentium4, AthlonXP, AthlonMP, Athlon64, Opteron, Xeon, Itainum2, Alpha64, G5 PPU ... already has a TCPA capable system.

Maya5, 3D Studio Max6, SoftimageXSI 3.5, Photoshop 8.0, Any 2004 Notorn Software, Any 2004 Macromedia Software, Any Microsoft 2002-2004 Software is currently protected by it.

No doubt alot of people are unaware of it because right now, they don't use it to actually protect thier software. It is currently being used to track people who pirate software.

Why? Because of what the industry IS again ... and that is making an International Law that outlaws any system that doesn't use TCPA.
If they can prove that enough people will pirate such things they stand a better chance of outlawing most current hardware and software, at the penalties similar to piracy.

Personally i welcome TCPA with open arms, i don't welcome Microsoft's Legal Bid with this technology. It is going to far and is something that will be fought to keep it from actually getting into the courts as long as possible... not for the sake of pirating Joe's because becuase it will crash the industries economics as well causing alot of legimate business's either to run illegaly or go out of business.
This is something that could affect my job at the end of the day.

This would never work. Just look at the Pentium Vs. Athlon Fight. Pentium thought they had the had the market, so charged hell for their processors, and then this little company that few had heard of (at least in the UK) came up with a super fast cheap as mince processor, and booted Pentium off their top spot. Be Warned, Microsoft: You're next. That's all i have to say

Easily Confused summed it up nicely when he said:

Microsoft might be broken before TCPA ever comes into existence. It's just made too many people in too many places very annoyed. Right now the European courts are gearing up to take Microsoft to court because of multimedia in Windows. European courts are concerned that rivals aren't getting a level playing field with multimedia and wants to try it in court.

Since there's really not the tradition of settling out of court in Europe, well not as strong, there probably won't be an agreement unless the Commission requests that Microsoft sign on the dotted line or else...

It's going to be fun to watch a bunch of Seattle lawyers trying to match their wits against some dry old British barister (?) or some french judge. Let's all hope it's a French judge, btw.

:: sighs :: this is begining to sound like alot of kids talking about something they only have a fleeting knowlage of.

TCPA quite frankly is a good thing. Hell DBP with TCPA would have saved me alot of Dongle and CD headaches.

TCPA won't disable games made in DBP or anyother thing for that matter

only software WHICH THE DESIGNERS PUT IN the TCPA technology will be checked. Meaning nothing will change for us (unless you opt to put TCPA in your game)

it gives the makers of a game the option (to pay a fee) to prevent your game from being pirated

Do you really think Microsoft would do something to cause everyone to switch to another OS? ha!

and those anti-TCPA websites are made by people who hate MS to start with, or people who want everyone to switch to Linux, etc

Relax Dean no one typed that TCPA would disable anything from what I've read.

If you think that "nothing will change for us" you have a lot to learn about Trusted Computed Platforms.

Lol, will you stop it!

Anyway back on subject. Preston's (i think it was him) was most likely right about this whole thing *not* being the end of DB. I mean, I probably should have read more about it while responding...

But is this DEFINATELY going to be in the next version of Windows?
