Besides Neetlebox, another Russian guys shows their stuff:

iPi Soft, Motion Capture For The Masses

Quote: "iPi Desktop Motion Captureā„¢ is a markerless motion capture technology that literally puts motion capture at animator's desktop. You can record a video right at your workplace using 1 or 2 MS Kinects, webcams or inexpensive digital cameras and have it converted to 3D animation on your PC. The technology is accurate, easy to use and affordable."

Quite a few of these floating around, many using the PS2/3 webcam as well now as they are...

umm the three images linked here are blank...

EDIT

Mind you, why can we not just use a regular HD webcam? or do these kits [their website is painful to browse] come with additional parts like the trackers?

That's youtube videos. And there is a link to the site, where are lot more.

EDIT

you CAN use any cam, but some are just recommended.

Obviously a Kinect is more suited for 3D motion capture than a standard webcam, because the Kinect has two cameras for 3D space.

You can't do it with a single PS eye cam though, you need 2-4 of them I think (as they don't have depth sensing like the Kinect does)

For me 4-6 PS Eye cams are cheaper for me to find than to get 2 Kinects. I'll just try Craigslist or Gamestop. lol most likely Craigslist.

when I checked them out It was due to their very high frame rate compared to other live camera devices

Quote: "
Q: Can I use high-resolution cameras to improve tracking quality?

A: No. For our software higher resolution does not give much benefit. As this is markerless technology, we do not need to track small markers, and 640 x 480 resolution will work as good as HD. For motion capture fps (frames per second) is much more critical parameter for tracking accuracy. Sony PS Eye camera, that allows to record at 60 fps with low distortions, is currently most recommended model. "

I've been looking at home motion capture software for a while.

I was checking out the demo of the alternative and similarly priced Iclone which works in realtime with a Kinect, it is however a little laggy and stiff for fast actions, however for basic animations like walking and gesturing it is ok.
aparently I have an unusual range of motion in my limbs...(I Don't)
good for basic animations, and you can put your face onto their standard model easily, which is kinda cool.

I'm not a complete idiot -- Some parts are just missing.
