Yesterday something odd happened on my PC and I don't know what caused it or how to cure it simply.

I was working on a copy of a project and suddenly after an innocuous change in the code the DBPro compiler crashed with the familiar Windows "blah, blah, blah stopped working" message. I then closed the editor and decided to clean up the folder. But Windows wouldn't let me delete the old exe file from a previous compile. I just got the following error window:

The only solution I've found is to reboot the PC - I can then delete the unwanted files in the usual way. For some odd reason this problem seems to be restricted to this one folder and copies of it - I can edit other projects, and compile, delete, etc as usual.

The only clue I have is that the file deletion problem occurs after the DBPro compiler has crashed. Is it possible that the files are being locked somehow by the automatic Windows error reporting system?

But why the DBPro compiler should crash at all is another mystery.

It might be worth checking to see if the file is open somewhere, for instance right click on My Computer and click on manage. Then you should have the Computer Management view open, and select Shared Folders, Open Files, and see if the exe is in use. You can force it closed from there.

I've only seen this problem in Windows7, it's probably some security thing preventing the program being changed.

I got a fever, and the only prescription, is more memes.

After it crashes, it probably didn't close (I think the compiler launches multiple .exes, so it could close one, leave another open). I've had the problem before, just go into task manager -> processes, see if your .exe is still running, then just end it.

This was Vista.

I'd already tried that - no sign of anything DBPro related open anywhere.

Anyway, the problem has now gone away. I solved it as follows:

1. reboot
2. delete files I didn't need, i.e. exe, dbpro, etc.
3. create a new .dbpro project file with same name, code, etc, in same folder as before.

Then, Yippee!, everything is back to normal. Looks like either the .dbpro file or one of the Windows system references to it got corrupted somehow.

Thanks for the suggestions anyway.

Reminds me of this in Nostalgia Critic's review of Judge Dredd:
