I'm sorry, but I laughed so hard.

I am interested in the concept of a Steam Box, because Valve are speaking as if it will be a breed of console-PC hybrids, not a single unit available from Valve. Plus, Steam has 50 million registered accounts, 35 of which are active. XBL is the second largest with 40 million registered, and I'd warrant that their active user base is probably around 30 million.

So Steam has a lot more force than you'd expect, and those who say people will never abandon their PC for a console, even a Valve one are ignoring the fact that many people have both. And if Valve release something that uses your vast Steam library, plays high quality games in a sweet way, and doesn't melt itself like the 360 did, then plenty of them will probably swap their consoles for a Steam Box.

What I hope is that the age of exclusive titles dies horribly and brutally. Seriously, who actually bought a PlayStation solely to play Uncharted? That's just a dumb use of money, same as if you bought a 360 just to play Gears, or Halo. The hardware itself barely made any money, and I think they sold at breakeven or even a loss to get consoles out.

Right now, games are being created to justify the consoles' existence. I want a system where the box is irrelevant and purely down to pricing and controller design taste. Imagine how much money MS could have made, if Halo was PS3 ready? Or Sony, if they'd let Uncharted be an all-platforms title.

There's a reason Call of Duty is one of the best sellers year-on-year, it's big, and everyone can play it.

Steam Box - Yay! Android Gaming Devices - Meh.

Of course, Steam Box will only really interest me if developers target a (relatively) consistent set of hardware. Having to check and see if my Steam Box meets the minimum requirements for a game and then having a sub-par experience because it isn't up to snuff would be kind of lousy compared to the current console experience. I'm hoping that Valve's own Steam Box will sort of set the pace.

I think that owning a Steam Box, aesthetics etc. aside, is the peace of mind that at the end of the day, you can buy any game and be pretty certain it will definitely work. If there's one system config that devs are going to target for games - it'll be the Steam Box.

Also, this is definitely worth a read, obviously, take it with a pinch of salt. Rumour has it that both the new Xbox and the new PS will be running on x86 hardware (with Xbox running a modified W8 kernel, and PS running a modified Linux kernel) then I can imagine that we're going to be seeing a decrease in the number of exclusives due to the diminishing cost of developing for multiple platforms (the platforms would now be very similar, with APIs being the key difference.).

This also has a very interesting effect, in that PC, Xbox and PS would all be using the same architecture, leaving the Wii U a PITA for developers.

Totally... I think if they had just the one platform, they would not relly have the numbers... is there a break down of their numbers per platform?

Personally I welcome Valves move to create a Fixed Platform Element to which benchmarking can be Averaged against, But I think this would rule out PC gaming once more... and with that I think Valves shift towards Android is simply a reaction based decision, and not intentional... Just my view on it...

I guess AppGameKit would have to be modded slightly in order to cope ith development for the Piston XD [Talk about ancient]

Oh well...

I don't quite follow? Valve's Steambox will be not be running Android, but probably a Debian-based Linux distro.
