Hi Captive, and welcome to the FPSCreator forums.
I sort of remember Captive, from the early 90's on Atari?
I can't say if there is anything like it here, but if your up to it
give it a shot. Would be great to see something like that again.
FPSC is great and anything is possible with time and patience.
Everone here is friendly and if you get stuck just ask for help.
Grab yourself the Official FPSC Guide/manual. It helps alot
when starting off.
best of luck

Hi Captive welcome to the forum and hope you enjoy making games with FPSC.

First I would update to the latest version once you order is passed, you can down load FPSC from your order history while you wait for the cd.

The Official FPSC Guide/manual. is now in a folder called DOC's when you update FPSC.

I remember that game and would be nice to see someone remake it in fpsc so all the best.

Hi Captive,

Welcome to the land of FPSC.

I'm closer to 70 than 50 but am having a lot of fun with FPSC. I wrote FPI EditPad to edit fpi scripts. There are other's available as well. Also, I wrote the mod, RPG Mod. Since you have not given an email address, please contact me about the RPG Mod because I think the inventory system available would be easier for you to use. It looks as if it will be needed for Captive. Blackfox will disagree with me, though. He likes to do things the hard way without having to rely on a mod.

THEORY - you know everything but nothing works. PRACTICE - when everything works but don't know why. For me, theory and practice are combined: nothing works and I don't know why.

Ah yes, the game Captive by Mindscape. We actually still play the DOS version of it along with our other DOS games. I find it fascinating how games we played when younger and in the DOS days are making a come back. And they say DOS is dead. LOL

Flatlander's mod is solid and the inventory system is very good. We used his mod on a few developments we've since sold and the clients were very pleased with the usage and results. One warning (no offense to Flatlander), but you will need a good grasp of scripting. Once that is achieved, the sky is the limit.

I guess we do use a mod, since we rewrote our source for v1.17, cleaned it up, restructured it and added features to it. My wife dubbed it FoxMod and it stuck ever since. We have our own inventory system now for our developments- very detailed and complex with commands and scripting. As long as it works, that is all that matters.

Yes, for Captive, an inventory system would definitely be useful. RPG Mod would be able to achieve a similar development.

There's no problem that can't be solved without applying a little scripting.

LOL yes, remember it quite well. Good thing we bought a USB floppy so we can play all our DOS games still. Fun times, even to this day.

lol Why would you want to play them like that when you can have them on your harddrive guess you just like to be old skool and keep the feel of old games.

You just can't beat abandonware and dosbox lol

The floppy drive is used to install our DOS games only since most are still on the disk and I have not moved them onto CDRom. I have installed most of them and configured DOSBox for them already. And I don't need DOSBox since I have VMWare with a DOS system already setup and running fine.

Welcome to the forum. I love Captive, I still play it occasionally on an ST emulator. Back in the day I got to base 60 - took ages to get that far.

I think FPSC would be a good system for making a Captive style game, but re-imagined as an FPS perhaps. The FPSC map editing etc is ideal, but you would have to do some programming to get the camera and RPG elements working.

Captive is one game that really deserves a remake, I'd kill for an iPad version - but the creator (Tony Crowther) has said that he doesn't approve of anyone doing a remake. If you want to play a game like Captive, but probably a lot more like Dungeon Master, then check out Legend of Grimrock - might give you some inspiration on how a 3D dungeon crawler can work.

This is a pretty good site for all things Cappo:

I got a fever, and the only prescription, is more memes.

That looks like something that would be pretty cool to do in FPSC. It could probably be done by using HUDs and some variable trickery to emulate an on-screen mouse.

Hi all again thanks for the info & help I think I'm going to need a lot of it

Playing in DOS. . LOL yep tried the Amiga Emulator works a treat but alas no save as no floppy . . Yep this new Quod4 pc no floppy wow how things have changed

Then I was thinking why not Web search and see if. . .
Mr Crowther or Mindscape have done a 21st Century make over . . Alas no and yes searched all forums and as you say Mr Crowther does not want any one touching his creation . .

WOW what plans as he got for this great 90's game

Ok so I'm thinking if he wont do it and this great FPS software is around and I'm running a all singing dancing PC with

New Quad Core AMD FX4100 3.6GHz & Fan Retail Box 4.0g DDR3 1333mhz Branded fast access ram 500g Sata III 7200 Ultra fast Hard Drive ATI HD 3000 Radeon Graphics 22x DVDRW +/- DL Sata

And I'm running DOS !

So the idea I have is this. . . .
Ok I'm 53yr old retired ( due to car crash. . long story ) lot's of time on my hands Have loads of ideas and no programming skills. . . Only out of the old computer magazines typing in loads of games and running them only to find error as I missed a . ( full stop ) on a data line some where LOL

So My idea is this FPS creator and as its a First person view there will be only 1 Droid or player with 4 lives . .

Now then I have seen model pack 61 I think in a Derelict Space station and another one Looks like the old dungeon master

Ok can you all see where this is going . . .

Yep CAPTIVE comes to the 21st Century

So the next thing is the enemy / power ups / shop doors / puzzles etc.

Do I try and capture as much info the old game has or up date it to the FPS level . .

I mean think about it we used to put our icon hand on a

MAINS SOCKET. . for gods sake imagine that this day and age

So Guys I'm sitting and sketching out maps as I read your posts I'm in two minds as to

1 Start the game already in Planet 1 looking at the door turn around and you will see clip boards (Message from Ratt )

OR

2 Start the game as per original a Map in space and the icon flashing for Butre I think.
Set Swan off and land and low an be hold where off

But thing is Can FPS do item 2 or should l I say Can I programme it with NO IDEA on programming skills to emulate it

I await Feed back as I now know it takes 2hrs. as I’m a newbie posting LOL or any volunteers to help with a few scenes wont go a miss or sketch’s and even a game tester but get in quick as first come first served as I will only allow a hand full to help and test as 200 ideas is a hand full I think

So have you played Captive in the past got any ideas comments . . lets have some fun

Hi Captive
As s4real stated "the Official FPSC Guide/manual is now in a folder called DOC's when you update FPSC"
I take it you download your copy of FPSC by now?
BY chance if your still looking for it here's a quick link to the manual and other useful links.

OK Guys I'm around 2hrs behind as a newbie until the Mod posts it for me. . but yea did upgrade Got the manual and it wont work so if any one running windows 8 here is a fix I worked around

( I think a trip to Staples tomorrow and make a booklet)

The image on the left crash's with above posts errors . . why I have no idea as this is what the software put on my Desk top Pc ?
the image on the right is what runs the programme no problem ( I hope )

I have now PINED the icon to the task bar (windows 8) as in below

So when I now click it this pops up as in below

And we are up and running . . now hope that helps any other Win8 people out there

Now I need to load all my Game packs in . . Help I'm scared

Dont be scared...lol it's all good
Yeh, windows 8 may have some problems running 1.19? As I have windows 7 I can not say. Look into the new beta 1.20 at top of this forum, last pages talks about installing for win8. Most users Win8 are having success with no problems.
Also you said you cant open the manual? Its a .pdf. Do you have a pdf reader? If not search for a free one online.
Here is a link to the basic video tutorials to get started.http://www.thegamecreators.com/?m=view_product&id=2001&page=VideoTutorials

Oh yeh,one more thing. FPSCreator uses DX9 (directX 9). As I dont have Win8 not sure what comes with it. If you have problems and it says your missing dx9,do a quick search for DX9c/install it.

The problem that the "SetupScreen" fixed is the fact that FPSC wasn't running as administrator. What you need to do is right click your "The Game Creators" folder, which should be in program files. Now click "Properties", then choose the "Security" tab and click "Edit" now click on your user name and then check the box that says "Full control", once you click apply and the process finishes, you shouldn't have any more problems.

Hi Captive, good to see TZK's fix worked. Go slow, it can be overwhelming at first, but gets easier quickly. As for the .bmp & .jpeg...they use different formats because some compress better to save on space/memory (some are a big difference)
Texture editor, have you tried Gimp or Paint.net. Both are free, easy to use and most here have used them at some time.(hey it's free)
Also, check out this site hosted by a fellow member "Blackfox"

Because of his unselfish efforts we have very large database of entities for free. We're pretty luckly to have this.

Yes your definitely right this is no straight forward cut . . copy. . paste type of Creator it requires a bit of understanding but when I watch a 20 minute video of how to. . I have forgotten the first 2 minutes LOL I think Ill stop now and review the way I want to go ahead with this like the Shop character . . not as easy as I would like. . god dam this age thing wish I was younger LOL

Oh well I will have to think of another way to go but using the same idea tho and get the next location to next level and then blow up the Generators

Hmm so working on the doors I got that sorted key / auto / touch etc.
Now how do I collect say money / Gold and save it hmmm next thing to look at any ideas people
