And some other interesting tech talk behind disaster recovery.

None of that made any sense whatsoever...

Translation please... because I just saw a none-powered, none-connected system fall of a building and somebody showing a screen doing nothing... and yet apparently a box falling off a building was supposed to be a metaphor for what? falling down? the test bags kind of showed the concept quite clearly if you asked me... a bit cheaper too...

a server crashing, maybe?

glad noone did. otherwise, we might have had a less-enticing thread title (and a failed ad campaign).

i'm sure it paid for itself. that's what ads tend to do.

Yeah but they don't fall from a building, so I kind of did not see the need for it being done... but it does show the financial irresponsibility of the company... as well as moral? irresponsibility...

Funny thing though, they make it look as if 18 floors is a big thing lol

You don't think 18 floors is very high?

I don't see how you can consider the company irresponsible for doing this, let alone what morality has anything to do with it. It was an over-the-top way of demonstrating how their disaster recovery software takes over on the backup systems when the primary goes down. It's marketing. Way to suck the fun out of it valentine!

I've always thought that marketing would be an amazing job to go into. Hell it's not like they even have to do much - whoever comes up with the most outrageous idea has earned his paycheck!

MrValentine, tell me you are not serious? Its a VERY clear metaphor that they explain to you in directly after it fell down... I dont see how you can fail to see it

Almost dropped a server rack on my toes once... was moving it across the building at work - so the facilities hulk decided we could just carry it (brave talk when you've got steel toecaps on). I held my side for about 3 seconds then dropped it, so he just dragged it himself, like a non-IT-sympathetic caveman. Server rack is installed and fine, apart from a gnarly dent in the bottom corner.

These things look like they're made from lightweight sheet metal, but they weigh a bloomin ton.

I got a fever, and the only prescription, is more memes.

You think moving a rack is bad, try an ATM machine! I don't think most people realize that it's really a digital safe. And safe's that size have doors roughly 6" thick of solid steel. It took 3 of us just to tip it up long enough to get a pallet jack under it. Only to find out later it didn't fit through the door. I still don't know how they got it in the room in the first place!

My old boss got sick of his PC and smashed it to pieces under a 300wt power hammer like the one at the start of this video (but bigger):

That was funny

No, that's a drop hammer. At least the first one is. The second one (in the first vid) is a power hammer but much bigger than any I've used. The hammer my boss had was the same as the one in my video (alldays and onions) but a 3cwt not a 2cwt.

Ouch! Much left of the escalators?

I was helping a friend move one day and got tired of waiting on these two chumps that were helping her move in very slowly. So I grabbed the 200lb safe off the truck and started walking up the single flight of stairs up to the 2nd floor apartment. I got to the last step and nearly fell backwards holding the safe. My heart definitely skipped a few beats!

Those machines reminded of something an instructor showed me once. Anyone familiar with friction welding?

Even a 300 weight hammer is pretty scary sometimes. I was once making 40mm square bar octagonal and the steel was a little cold and started bouncing / rotating uncontrollably. I once saw someone get their head smacked by a similar piece of steel, nearly crushed his face. Nasty.

I've seen videos of this before, it's pretty amazing. I've done quite a lot of fire-welding in my time.

We had a marine where I was training at have his nuts sheered off by an exploding grinding wheel. I didn't see it, nor would I want to see that. Just hearing about it made us cringe.
