Hello.

I'm adding game pad support for my 3rd person shooter. But then I noticed that there are only 3 axis I can pull data from, The X, Y, and Z. and that's only 1 and a half sticks. am I missing something, or will I have to find a work around or just ditch it?

Thanks.

Ah I feel so silly lol I mentioned the Z on the other thread, Which controller are you enabling? most, simply use the x360 controller as default, there are two triggers which work on a sort of float mechanism..., check for the x360 plugin on the forum, there are a few, the one you want it one which has a funny website... let me know if you get stuck finding it...

I'm using a pc controller. looks like a xbox controller in button layout. But that's all.

I tried the xbox driver with an xbox controller I have. But it did not work. the program did not even execute.

But I don't have a wired one. just wireless. I have a charger cable, but that did not help.

Did you try the JOYSTICK TWIST and JOYSTICK HAT commands?

(...or did I completely miss the point of your question?)

AFAK 360 wireles pad is not supported by windows, only by xbox.

Also windows downloads driver thru windows update. And even if your pad is not 360 but compatible it treats is as 360 and downloads driver too.

You are mistaken. I'm not using joysticks.

I did try though, dumber things have happened. I did not get anything from it. thanks

Yah this one runs. But still no input from the controller.

as cool as a 360 controller would be all I really need is a 4th axis. But it seems DBP has no such axis.

I already found The xbox thing. I meant I found the 4th axis. it's not listed like "CONTROL DEVICE Z()", but rather "joystick twist z"

so to use all four axis do...

CONTROL DEVICE x()
CONTROL DEVICE y()
CONTROL DEVICE Z()
joystick twist z()

You need to be careful with joystick commands, because every company is stupid enough to make up their own method of input. My Logitech controller for example is not going to have the same button or axis layout as your controller.

You should think about adding your own config menu.

Thanks for the tip Comet. I'll be sure to add a menu to set up game pads.

Hey Comet. Do you have any suggestions for axis? I know how to do a user input for buttons. But I'm not to sure how to do that for axis.

I don't recommend you to hardcode gamepad configuration. Make (maybe standalone) setup utility which can detect pressed control element and map it to the user desired ingame control.

About axis: normal gamepad have 6 axis: 4 for sticks and 2 for triggers, so it's not 3 and not 4.

You have to set up a system just like with the buttons. The basic idea is to give an ID to every axis command (for example, joystick x() is ID 1, joystick y() is ID 2 etc.) then when its time to check what the user wants to use, you can determine which axis ID he's selecting. Does that make any sense?

Wait. There's an important detail you overlooked. The trigger buttons are also share an axis and as result cancel each other out when pressed. Holding both down is the same as holding none.
