Hi guys, I just noticed that I am missing 60gb of storage space on my SSD. I got the drive this christams and it seemed to work fine since I installed it, but when i went into my computer today, I noticed something suspiccious. Earlier today, I had 30gb of space left on the drive but when i look now, windows said that there is only 2-1.5 GB left.

This got me realy suspiccious and I started looking for things that may have been installed and would take up 30 GB of storage, but I didn't find anyting. So I calculated the total space of the folders on the drive. The total size of everything on the SSD is 111 GB, howevere acording to widnows the total size of the drive is 167 GB and there is only 2 gb left. The 2 gb varies randomly between 2.0 and 1.5 GB.

So, it seems like 60 GB of storage space has gone missing and now that I think of it, I have been missing 20gb or so for 2 weeks. Do you have any idea of what could be causing this, could the drive be damaged.

If this thread is moved to Geek Culture you may get some more responses. I would recommend you download the free WinDirStat. Install and run it. After some time of calculating it will show you exactly what each folder is consuming etc. and you can sort by size to see what files may be the problem. The visual table allows you to click the largest memory areas to see exactly what file(s) are responsible.

You may also want to right-click the drive in My Computer and select Properties. Then press Disk Cleanup and see what all the temporary files etc. are using up. I've also seen the MEMORY.DMP file (in Windows) directory take up huge amounts.

Oh, did I post this here? If a mod sees this, could you move it to the geek culture board.

As for the SSD, it's an intel 330 180gb. I will try your suggestions when I get home

Intel Toolbox

Interesting...

And this one if it is required...

Intel Firmware

But if this is simply an issue of used up space... and not missing space... then you could ignore these anyway...

But that is a recent product and so it should be clear of those early day SSD issues... which applications do you have installed that you think may be the culprits?

And yes, run Disk Clean Up and also if required Disk Defrag... though you should not need to do that... but if you are running Windows 8 it should know how to handle it...

Thanks for the help guys!

Acording to this program, there are 2 huge files on the drive. One called "pagefile.sys" This one takes up 32gb of storage space, the other one called "hiberfil.sys" and takes up 11 gb of storage.

After doing some searches on google, I found that both of these seem to relate to "virtual memory". I think I have disabled this function on the SSD, but im not sure if I can delete the files or better yet, move the files to my regular HDD. How would I do this, and is it safe to just delete the files?

Thanks for the link, it seems windows dosn't delete the file when you disable the virtual memory. I had to set it to 1gb to actually get the file to go away.

Actually, I have a sort of related problem, the filesystem om my SD card for my phone seems to be broken. It started a few weeks ago when my phone started saying that the SD card was empty or had an unsuported filesystem. This stayed for a few days but stopped showing after a while. However, after a week the notification returned. If I try to insert the card in other devices, it either says there is no files on it, or dosn't get notied at all.

I had quite a bit of files on the card and im wondering if there is a way to possibly recover the files from the card.

There are tools for finding corrupted data on a file system. I can't find the one I used, Google is your best friend.

Thinking about this again, how much RAM have you got?

If that disk was the main drive and had paging set to automatic, then based on your physical memory it would increase according to the amount of installed working RAM... so 16GB memory would require enough space on the disk to be dumped in case of a system error and such...

Just saying...

[ I was reminded of this while installing Windows Server 2012 ]

Cool, I seriously need to upgrade my RAM to 16 or 32 GB soon...

I think that may have been the reason, was it set to automatic paging or none?

It was set to automatic, and for some reason, windows decided that it needed 33 gb of extra memory

Yeah, that is because you always need at least double the recommended as a peak maximum value, but the recommended as the min value, at least that is how I have done it since about a decade ago and I have never had any issues, and always had good system responsiveness, the recommended value is calculated based on your Physical Memory...

Hope that makes sense...

I've always set mine at static size of about half the ram. Really the best size to set it is the max size you need.

Just checked mine. It's currently allocated at 16GB(system managed) but it recommends 24GB.
