Thanks for the comments...

Yes, the shadows are just textured plains (I noticed through a bug in gta3 that this is how they are doing it too - I could see a tree shadow coming through the floor from underneath - it was set too low)

I use photoshop for the textures and any modeling program will work for the objects - nothing special- just boxes really.

I have an editor program I wrote in DB to place all the objects.

I tried to make a program that randomly generated cities like this.
I failed.

Thanks again for the comments...

- the "turd" is actually a rusty manhole cover
- the "white ball" represents a light source (this is only shown in the editor)

billy777, have to say this is looking very impressive, and a project for the community to watch. Throw some cars and people in there, and you have gta3.

Nice job, and I hope for this best in this project.

Looking awesome! - I reckon most people would like to make a game like that, you've done well to get it looking so cool - well done.

There is a sorta secret command that might shock you with it's coolness, you should try it out and see what it does : On all your transparent textured objects, instead of using SET OBJECT TRANSPARENCY Obj,1 - try using SET OBJECT TRANSPARENCY Obj,2. It blends the textures into the world, and also lets you keep filtering on without having to worry about ugly lines around the textures.

How big cities can you currently handle? (fps/speedwise)

It's cool "zero" - others were probably wondering too about that stuff.

As far as the fps - its playable on a 500mhz but you will really need a 1gig (or faster) with GOOD video card for best results.

The city is not that big yet. Just a couple of blocks right now. Im going to have to use clipping so only the near buildings are rendered as you walk through.

Hey VAN... i will have to try that SET OBJECT TRANSPARENCY (does it work in DB classic? thats what im using)

Thanks for the comments!

Looks very good I will be interested to see how you keep the frame rate up.

With a little work games that match DBP can be produced in DBC just takes a little work

Wll the city be flat or have hills?, and are you still using a matrix?

How do you make this in Classic?

Those games always have that 'look' to them, but this looks like pro!

But how to made the dark shadows?
I cant make them. The DBC ghosted plains are lighter from the other objects, no?

Or DBC have a secret command too, what change transparency color?
Or what?

Ghost Object On Objno,1

The ',1' flag tells it to make the shadow a dark shadow instead, the shadow image should be dark with a mid-grey backdrop. Experiment a bit and you'll find a decent method.

I would also like to know how youve created such a great looking city - I could use it for my game aswell. Plus, I think theres a slight possibility that billy777 could be Lee Bamber in disguise. How else could it look that good? Its a conspiracy!

Thank you for the nice words everyone.

Nope... im not Lee. Just a guy fooling around with DarkBasic. Its a fun language! I normally program in C and Delphi - but darkbasic makes it so easy I can focus on the graphics more - which is the fun part!

Ive tried to convert my game over to dp pro (using the trial version)- but it wont convert properly- so im staying with orginal for now.

That is looking really nice...

Btw, if you take out the matrix, you will notice a massive speed increase... DB Matrix's are very sluggish on your FPS...

Hope I Helped...
