I came up with this idea for popularising an app by having a nag screen that comes up every so often. But instead of having an ad, or asking the user to buy the full version, it has a Facebook Like button and tells the user that when they like the app, the nag screen will stop coming. What does everybody think of this? Has anyone tried it or heard of anyone else who's tried it? Then main problems that I can see with it is for the users who don't have Facebook, and it might not be possible to detect if the user's already liked it (and might not stop the nag screen)

That's a terrible idea. That would purposely make me NOT like the app.

yeah, I'm not likely to ever use it, except if I decide to see if it works, but after all, normal nag screens (like ads) are 'disliked' by users

Stick with the tried and true method, pop up an alert with three options: "Rate App Now!", "Maybe Later", and "No Thanks". Show the alert every x amount of times the user launches the app - not right when the app launches, but elsewhere in the app, perhaps after beating a level or saving a game - (every 5 launches or so is generally acceptable). Stop showing the alert once the user has tapped the Rate App Now button or the No Thanks button.

Users will generally either rate the app if they like it or they will tap the Maybe Later option (as long as your app is worth rating).

You can easily modify this to a "Share on Facebook" alert instead of prompting the user to rate it, but a much better reason for giving the user the ability to share any part of your app on Facebook is if it gives them some sort of bragging rights. Nobody really cares to share a post like "I'm using Upset Pigeons on my iPhone! Click here to view it on iTunes!". People are a lot more interested and willing to share information from your app if it is posting their most recent high score, or telling people an achievement they just gained.

But to answer your question, no, that sounds like a terrible idea. If I was presented with an alert saying "Hi there, if you want us to stop showing you this alert, then like our app! Tap here!", I would never use the app again and go to the effort of taking the extra 5 minutes out of my day to write a bad review for the app on it's page.

I wish FB would stop being integrated into everything. Even iOS 6 integrated FB into many of its things.

I think nag screens are a bad idea no matter the method. Software, even ones I like, I will never purchase or use for very long if I'm constantly nagged by it.

I could not agree more! Nagging is perhaps the worst thing any software I have ever used has done. I would much rather use bug riddled software than software that nags me. And as for being nagged to do something, for example liking an app, that would be bribery and dishonest rather than getting genuine likes. And I would NEVER touch any of my money to software that annoyingly nagged me to do so.

That's my 3 cents.

well lets not go overboard here

There are several games I've downloaded for my iPhone that I've stopped playing, not because I lost interest, but because I got tired of being propositioned by another game ad every time I completed a 2min level. I stopped playing games on FB altogether because my wall was spammed with game updates from any friends that played it as well.

Sure, nag screens seem popular these days but that doesn't mean everyone should do it. I understand that by providing a free version of your game you need some way of enticing people to pay for the full version, but I don't think nag screens are the way to do it.

Baaaaaad idea!
I once considered nags. As I test, I used the nag-version of my software as my everyday comic-reader. The nag happened at app-exit based on the day of the month (basic n MOD x == 0 ? thing iirc). Well, at first it just irritated, then it annoyed. Then I rebuilt it without the nags for myself. Consequently, I've actually disabled the download (prior to disabling my whole site for renovations, lol). Long and short: do not.

Honestly, I think nags are a pest and there are better ways. If you want people to spread the work about your app, then have a "Like this page: [your product's Facebook page or whatever] and get this cool, awesome bonus stuff". Surprisingly, people like free things and they like bonus things so the math works out. You won't believe the things I've seen people like on Facebook (when I still used Facebook - very briefly).

Yeah, I agree. It drives me insane. One would think FB was trying to take over the world.
Btw if you "Like" my post you could win a year's supply of potato chips.

Putting any sort of request to the user at app-exit is a bad idea. The user is closing your app because they either wish to use a different app for a bit or have to put their device away. Prompting them to do something for your app's sake at this point in time will almost always result in the user selecting "No" and getting annoyed with your app.

Yeah, I realised that after getting a first-hand taste of how annoying it was. That's why I disabled the download. When I get around to rebuilding it - and I want to revamp it completely - I won't have the nag as it's not even in the last saved version of the source. The worst part was that it launched your web-browser and sent you to the site Bad huh?
Seemed like a good idea at the time coz installers were doing it. In retrospect, prolly the most annoying thing I ever came up with. But you live and learn I guess.
