I have no experience with networks/Internet programming but would like to create and Internet Chat program.
The reason is, for creating an on-line RPG game where a group can chat and roll dice "honestly".

1. How hard is making a net connection between a few people?
2. Can you give me guidance in creating it?
3. I assume you have to use IPS numbers, so will you get hacked doing this?

Thanks for any assistance.

#3 HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHAHA Your not going to get hacked. It's OK. You prolly won't come across some1 who can and will honestly hack. And 99% of people who say they hack can't.

There is a network tutorial that comes with DarkBasicPro iirc. It's in the Technical Documents of the Help file. It's called "multiplayer secrets".

This tutorial explains everything from making a connection to sending mesages. I used that tutorial to work out the network features of DBPro.

As for the hacking, I don't know if that's really an issue. What are you exactly afraid of?

Thank you Gilfalas,
WOW that is a lot of info to digest. I am not sure I will be able to work out all the code to make the chat On-line part work. But I will try. Unless someone else is kind enough to help with the On-line part?

The reason I am worried about hacking is that your IP address is used in this program to play the game.

Your IP address is used in hundreds of ways. Heck, the moderators of this forum can probably see your IP address. If you're concerned about hackers, use a firewall and only let your authorized programs communicate.

I wrote a chat program based on the multiplayer secrets article. Good stuff. Your greater challenge will be to wrap it up in a nice interface. Were you planning on using dice macros like in OpenRPG?
(ie. Bob attacks Batrock with his +3 hammer. Rolling to hit and damage [1d20+3][1d6+3] )

If so, see the attached source code. You might want to delete or ignore the second half of the function which deals with crit tables. It's usage is the same [heat], but you'll need some additional code for loading your tables into your program.

[evil laugh]Bwa ha ha ha ... another IP address to add to my list ...

... but seriously, I posted a chat server/client to CodeBase a while back - it assumes a local network at the moment, but you could change the connection code relatively easily to prompt for an IP address and use CREATE NET GAME and JOIN NET GAME to connect instead of using the 'DEFAULT NET GAME' command.

zircher,
I was going to make my own interface. I wrote and MIRC game engine a long time ago where it was all text but it had drop down dire rolling with a "honesty check". The best part was my sound library. I made a CD that contained 600+ MB of menu driven sounds. So if you need to add battle sounds during play, or an evil villain laugh it was a breeze. Imagine playing along at night on IRC and you hear wind and rain effects, or a Monster growl. I also had Midi music at my command too.
I was going to re-write all of this and add the graphics interface once I figure out the Internet chat portion of this.

Slick! The sound effects idea sounds cool for a creative GM. My current project is a 3d chat program for gamers. It has peer to peer multiplayer chat, dice macros, and shared events such as moving of 3D models on a map. While I don't know how well my code will mix with your needs, feel free to bounce questions off of me.

Thanks zircher,
I am on a more pressing project now. Though I will still be looking into making my chat/die program as time permits.

The sound app was the best! Easy to use and very powerful. I had so many sounds at my command and I still use it for live game play.

Good luck with your 3d chat program!
