hey guys, im sure that you have seen this kind of post many times over. I'm rather new to this, learned a bit of visual basic but i know thats nothing in comparison to some or most of you here. I have been running through some tutorials and such but my main question is...how do you actually go about creating a game..

Alot of what im learning so far seems like sometihng id use to make a program for visual basic and such. I am kinda wondering where to even begin to start... i looked at FPS creator..that seemed to make a game fairly easy lol but what i want to know is where to begin to make a game with DBP as i dont really know.

Sure sure its very easy..but thats probably becuase you now know how to do it. Building a house is easy to after building so many of them but to a newcomer its overwhelming. So i respectfully ask for some guidance as to where to go from here and what to do.. rather looking forward to getting into it..i dont want to design something like halo or some other game lol just something small and work my way up. many thanks in advance to the ppl willing to help

You are so a new face. It carries out a tutorial that you perform first. You carry it out first.

Because this tutorial is average content, you can judge your ability.

You should develop a rough idea of what your first game should look like and what features it should have. (Good ideas are often the hardest part of game development.)

You will definitely want to post to the DBPro Newcomers forum as pcRaider suggested.

You might explore object creation and movement for starters.

Other important areas are lighting, texturing, terrains and matrices, sky spheres and skyboxes, applying shaders, device input, etc.

Like you said, start small and master the basics.
Don't hesitate to ask questions. Someone here will usually have some kind of useful advice.

Hi niteowl

I'm about six months into learning dbpro. I have some background in 3D and in basic programming. In beginning this process I expected it to take a year to fully understand dbpro and thus far It is working out that way. I'm in the process completing my first game.

The advise about coming up with a basic game idea is good. However make sure it is a simple game for starters.

This said, you should understand that if you plan on working with 3D, you,ll need to go outside dbpro for a lot of things. For example I use T.ed for creating terrains. The game creator store for .x models. You can use FPS creator to create interior environments which can be loaded into dbpro. Lean 3D concepts and coordinates, and always keep in mind that if you plan to use a mouse for some levels of game control that the screen coordinates and the 3D coordinate are different.

In general what I found is that you need to create a code platform upon which you can build your game. This platform includes routines for moving thru 3D space, load and position game assets, integrate things like sky spheres, and collision control. Advise - pass sky boxes and go direct to sky spheres. Note that FPS is a platform created in dbpro, though you do not have to be as complex in your platform.

In the dbpro help section you need to learn the commands, and understand there are often many ways to accomplish the same thing with different commands. Load and run the examples and then examine the code to see how it works.

There is no quick way to learn DBpro, If you want speed and shooter type games use FPS

good luck

I think enough has been mentioned here, but do also check out TDKs tutorials and the Hands On Dark Basic Professional Books from the main store... Daniels videos are very handy too!
