I've got 4 machines at work right now that keep failing to update. Each one appears to have about the same number of updates to install, 57 to 58. It downloaded them, starts to install, reboots, but fails to finish configuring then reverts back.

We're beginning to think it's a possible issue with MS, I've tried just about everything.

Try installing IMPORTANT marked ones first then optional after...

Or if .NET is in there, install that first then the rest after...

Post a pic of the lists if you can...

I'm not installing any optional updates, they're all important. New system builds, SP1. I think there's a conflict with .NET.

I've got one laptop completed by disabling all non-ms services through msconfig on startup, deleting the updates that have already been downloaded, redownloading and installing and that worked in 1 situation.

I had this problem with Windows 8 on my new PC. I did a Google search and it seems the problem for me was that my NVidia drivers were conflicting with Windows 8. I've updated my drivers, but haven't dared let it update since. I assume it has worked because it's no longer bugging me to update, but I guess I'll find out next time I need to update...by need, when it forces me to. I hate waiting 30 minutes for it to do the whole 'Reverting Changes' thing.

I suppose it's also possible .NET is responsible, coincidentally, when I updated I had also just installed .NET Framework 3.5. But some other people found it was NVidia drivers as well.

Some have nvida, others have ati. The last error message I got was 643.

We found a work around that seems to let us get the job done. Open msconfig and choose selective startup. Uncheck 'load startup items'. Then go to services tab, check hide all MS services, then disable all the other services. Reboot and try the updates again. Only 1 failed of the 50 updates that time, and running that update alone worked.

I had to install XP on a laptop now, and updates won't work for that either! It failed on all 97 updates. I've heard from two others that updates failed for them recently as well. What's going on!!!!!!

Hmm I wonder too. I can understand if it was both 7 & 8 doing it because they're siblings, but it is a little mind boggling XP is doing it too.

Your method got me to 99%, but I'm still getting it. It's annoying, because I need to do it to get .NET framework 3.5 to work and I need that to make sure my Games for Windows Live is working properly, so I can actually save on Batman: Arkham City because they decided to build the save feature into GFWL rather than a normal save feature. :/ I'm guessing to deter pirates? When presumably it really only cripples legitimate players.

Sepp, you can add and remove .NET from Add and Remove Windows Features from Add Remove Programs... left menu, and restart then run the update...

And the update is the problem. Gets to 99% and then comes up as unsuccessful and then reverts changes, not happened on my other 2 Win 8 PCs.

However, I am going to attempt to follow these steps here.

Try out this program, I used it earlier to get .NET installed on XP along with IE8. I was able to then use the normal windows update.

http://www.windowsupdatesdownloader.com/

I can't really explain why, but I think these issues are somehow related to .NET. I couldn't spend any more time with the XP laptop, I only had til 2pm to finish it and get it shipped out.

When XP failed the first time, I did a search. A forum said use the FixIt program to correct update errors. Well, it wouldn't run, stating I need SP3 to use it and to go to windows update to download it...... Fail!

It's getting to be pretty common on these PCs for updates to not work. I can't speak for the first set I dealt with that start this thread, but for the last 4 I've done I've narrowed it down to a simple matter of restarting the BITS service. I'm not entirely sure what roll this service plays with windows update, it's description makes it sound out to be more for convenience than a necessity.

Either enable the service through the services console(type services.msc in run menu) or open a command prompt with admin rights and simply type "net start bits".

I've followed all of the above steps. Once I found most of the installs were coming up as failed. The good news is, it seems I've got .NET 3.5 up and running now. I also used Windows' Troubleshooting feature, which got me down to 1 update that failed. And now, it's claiming I've not installed any updates as the update history is blank.

But I will try that solution as well.

If it's quite common, then I guess I'm lucky to have avoided it until now, unfortunately, it had to happen on my brand new shiny, shiny PC. It works perfectly fine, especially as .NET is fully working now, but obviously I want the security updates and for it to not keep prompting me for false installs.

I might even had to end up bugging MS on this one.

I was trying to update .NET 1.1 earlier, but it wouldn't let me. It said I had to remove the .NET hotfix first before I could install .NET SP1. What good are patches if I have to manually remove them to upgrade further? (btw, it didn't tell me which hotfix to remove either).

I do more than fix windows at work, i swear!
