Intel claims to have a working prototype(in lab) of a 48-core processor for phones.

Ah, did you acquire this phrase from Randomness and I's conversations?

48 cores is pretty epic; some pretty serious power saving technology has ought to be used to keep power consumption in check. Neat, nonetheless.

I heard that it will make making calls a lot better than before, a better sound maybe.

The quality of the sound is to do with the baseband processor (the bit which modulates the signals and sends them over the radio) and how much bandwidth you have. The higher the bandwidth - the better the call quality. Mobile CPUs have been able to handle high quality audio streams for ages thankfully - just have to wait for the telecomms tech to catch up!

Well, one of the advantage of having 48 cores on a phone is that you can have 48 separate calls at the same time

Does this have anything to do with graphene?

I don't think calls are limited per core, since 3-way calling existed for a long time.

Yet we still have the issue of bandwidth for all these lovely gizmos.

Wow! I hope it can send sms or even... have an adress book! Or make calls from subway!

...wait. Every phone can do that. Are they planning to play Crysis 5 on a cell phone? How do we live without it before?!

edit:
oh.

hmm... i got it.

- hey, cell phone!
- yes?
- draw this woman a moustache!
- done.

Well, smartphones are designed to do a lot more than that. They're not just for doing tasks as a phone, but are these days meant as a pocket device to replace all other pocket devices. They're more like pocket PCs with the power to make phone calls. The more power you give them, the more you can do with them. I find my smartphone to be really handy, I don't just use it to make phone calls, send messages or use the address book.

I use it for the internet when I'm out and about, I use it to check email, access Microsoft Office if need be (and I have), if I'm sitting around waiting I've got games I can play, I can go out with my headphones in an listen to music. I can even use it to get my bus schedules up, find places near to me, use it as a GPS device, get directions and a lot more, all in the palm of my hand. It's not a necessity (because there's other ways of doing all that), but it's a massive convenience.

I think we should by all means be happy research like this happens and that they're improving technology, it can offer new possibilities and new benefits. It would be interesting to see how the 48-cores will be applied. Once upon a time, anything above a single core 1ghz was considered insanely powerful. Today, it's considered pretty weak, my smart phone has more processing power than that.

So you need more cores to play more with your device. Why not, we all love to play with funny gadgets.

Of course we won't use the 48 cores for phone calls, but with todays programs only using 1 or 2 cores, I don't realy see a reason to have 48.

We haven't even mastered voice recognition, current methods are terrible. 48 cores will give the algorithms a lot more power and make them more accurate. That's one reason. Seriously how do you people expect technology to improve?

Well, 48 cores sure is an inprovment over a dual core CPU, but I doubt that they will be able to use all those cores efficently. This feels more like a marketing feature like megapixels have become for a camera

Everything seems so amazing and futuristic to me nowadays because I still have the technological standart of 2003 as my orientation point for whats good. Now we talk about having 48 cores in cellphone and that idea just seems utterly futuristic.

Amazing stuff nontheless.

It's kind of the opposite for me. New tech back in the 90s seemed so cool. Graphical advances in games was impressive with each new screen shot. But advances are so common now its no longer that impressive to me. When I first saw Windows without DOS it was like OMG how will we live. But nowadays you could park a spaceship outside my home and I'd be like, eh that's neat.
