Check it out.

Honestly... What do you think? I for one, would do this. I feel like the perfect candidate.

It may sound depressing but if I was to die in 70 years. Or die in 20 on frekin Mars... I would choose Mars.

Lifetime dream to travel to another planet. But I spose' it's most peoples here.

I already applied. Chances are I won't get it so I figured I'd give it a shot for a laugh. If I do get it though, I don't know what I'll think then...

Interesting moral dilemma: What if two of them have a child on Mars!

All they have to do is call up Commander Shepard. They'll have a suicide team in no time, then.

Signing up anyways

Same...

But I think I'd rather be a founder of the new, Earth colonized Mars.

I can't be the only one who finds this absolutely stupid.

Words cannot describe my Greatness... But I'll give it a shot.

What part of it? Going to Mars, or asking people to go?

Why don't they just send a couple of in-for-life cons up to mars?

Because there are clearly people who would jump at the opportunity to do this, who would probably feel pretty cheated if it were used as a punishment!

Personally, no - I'd much rather stay on earth until the journey is a 2-way one.

The part where they don't come back. There's a lot more to do on Earth than Mars.

Somebody's gotta do it, someone going there on a one way trip could provide a butt load of scientific evidence, possibly even allowing for a two way trip to occur eventually.

One thing I was wondering, legally, would this be considered assisted suicide?

It was actually my childhood dream to be the first man on mars. Oddly enough, I figured it'd be possible when I was in my 30s. So far, it's holding true.

@RedneckRambo, you don't understand. A lot of people would jump at the opportunity to be on Mars. And would happily start a new life there to do so; the prospect of coming from Earth to colonize another planet may sound stupid to some, but not to me.
It sounds awesome.

It was going to happen eventually. Personally I am glad to see progress.

Just being able to say that there are some Earthlings living on Mars would be worth it.

The Biggest problem: the internet would be so slow! it would take a minimum of one hour to load a single webpage! (it takes radio waves around half an hour to get to mars), and I don't think NASA (or whoever's sending them) would like martians to spend a few hours of each day just to look at Facebook once!

If that were the case the military would be illegal.

Perhaps by then we'll have instantaneous communication using quantum entanglement.

I would guess perhaps a year or two of the 8 year training will be spent in isolation in a capsule in Arizona or something, only then will you really know if you want to go or not

I think on one hand Redneck makes a fair point. There's got to be a point where you'll miss what you have on earth and I'm sure there's a point where the excitement, awesome and novelty wears off. I understand we of course want to make progress. But I suspect many people who think it's awesome may have second thoughts when they're up there.

However, I still think it's pretty cool. I am sure there are folks this would suit.

The first thing I think I would do is order a pizza.

Just married Couples should not do this because it would be suicide for them if the time comes when they would doubt each other.

Personally if there are going to be children you'd need a doctor and a teacher. If there is the possibility of there going to be violence then there should be some cops and leaders.

In my opinion if you want people to stay there for the rest of their lifes. Make a team of 100 because there would be variety and the feeling of a rural town on Earth will feel the same on Mars.

If it is less than a controlled 100 then people are going to go crazy real quick. Maybe more people are needed. To me I think it should look like a permanent stay to the outposts of Antarctica.

Even if I got swept up in the adventure of it I know there would be a day when I woke up and totally freaked out. I don't think my sanity would hold up long after that.

I can't imagine never hearing the birds again, never walking outside. No if you want to do this then you have to understand that you really are sacrificing your life for science, and it wont be fun.

I wonder what sort of plant they'd start terraforming Mars with. It has a thin CO2 atmosphere and limited light, but there's probably some hardy plant that could work with that. If we kept them watered, that is.

Think what would be very easy to plant with just water and dirt on red sand? My guess is grass.

Quote: "I don't think my sanity would hold up long after that."

You would have to be very very sane to do that. And Able to face the consequences of living where you are now. Yep you would need to be tested to face Mars for the rest of your life. To see if you're sane.

It would also have to be people who are really that passionate about the job of being there.
