It seems an odd question to ask on a board dedicated to the software, I know.

Many, many moons ago I bought Dark Basic from TGC. It was pretty good fun mucking about with it on ye olde 300Mhz monster. After a while I lost interest, went to uni, all that sort of jazz.

Whilst at Uni I heard about FPS Creator. It looked like a bit of light fun and I considered buying it. Then I found out that the thing didn't have an in level save feature and decided against it.

I found myself thinking about it again the other day. I am guessing that you can now save in level, and that there is a way of getting rid of that "99 Lives" business? I like the look of some of the minor coding you can do to alter some of the features, and the drag and drop level design is appealing. The current offer seems to give you a few add on packs, which is handy, and the twenty quid price point is appealing.

However, looming on the horizon is this new version. I seem to remember that there was a "new" DX10 version soon to be released when I last looked at FPS Creator. Has that died a death? I am not really fussed about having the latest and best thing on offer, but I do want something that has plenty of cool features to play with. I think that the current FPS creator should suffice. Do people find it a bit limiting though?

Finally, if I do go for this what are the must have packs, mods or add-ons I should lay my hands on? Are there any patches not included in the dl that I need to find?

Yeah, since 2007 or so.

Yes

It depends on what you want to do with it. It has its shortcoming: The memorycap but other than that its really great. Just take a look at some of the top projects out here, you'll see how you can handle it.

For example: there is bugsy who does these really cool open levels with it despite the limitations. check it out

Yes! You need to update your software at least to version 1.17.
s4real is working on a very promising mod you should keep an eye on.

The must have packs depend on your project. What kind of game do you have in mind?

Ah.. 2007! Now I feel old!

The levels in that link look great. When I last tried it there were a lot of very simple boxes and not a lot else.

I basically just want things to play around with. I like to muck about with lighting and pre-scripted events (during my quick glance at work I saw there was a pack with an exploding wall which I am thinking about getting, just to see how it works.)

I think it may be worth a go at 20 quid!

I've bitten the bullet and gone for it. Payment has been processed and I've downloaded the V1 version of FPSC from the website.

Do I have to wait for the actual hard copy to turn up before I can try it? There is a link saying "You can find your serial keys here" (or words to that effect), but alas no serial key is contained within.

I think that it is fair to say that I have itchy feet..

Remember to download the latest update (the version that comes on disk is V1.0) and also read all the stuff in the 'Docs' folder. Good luck!

I reject your reality and substitute my own...

I'm assuming you have it now, but you should be able to download it fairly quickly off the site once your payment is processed. Hope your having fun!

Bugsy I have removed your avatar, we are getting malware warnings because of the site it is hosted on. You'll need to host it elsewhere.
