I totally regret not pre-ordering this from the Kickstarter for $300, and now people are selling them for $1,000 a pop on eBay. I thought I could wait until the higher quality consumer version is released, but it's awful tempting. Their site indicates you can pre-order the prototype kit but it'll be at least June before any more are shipped. They don't yet have an estimate on when the consumer version will come out--I would guess not until later next year.

The community is really active, with a lot of demos and concepts already released that support it (many through Unity). Also, there's a Vireio driver that enables support for this headset in an increasing number of popular games including Half-Life 2, Mirrors Edge, etc. (I bought the 3D Vision glasses when they were a new thing, but I don't think they can compare to full immersion like this).

Why not? I think it'd be awesome!

That looks like the dumbest thing ever. Who's gonna want to play any games with that giant brick on their face? And I thought 3D glasses to watch tv was dumb, yea this is worse!

Keep in mind this is still a prototype model meant for developers, and it'll be more polished by the time the consumer one is released.

I'd argue that 3D has come a long way and tends to be much less gimmicky than it was in the 80s I found Avatar to be incredibly more immersive in 3D after first watching it in 2D, and I can't get enough of Metro 2033 and some other games in 3D. But of course it's all a matter of opinion, still it may be worth trying once before knocking all things 3D.

I never play games if my look is messy. Only a chair, fireplace and monocle. (sarcasm)

Lol really? You ought to be trolling. Anyone who cares about how they look while they're gaming more than they care about the gaming experience itself is just... And this 'brick' should in theory be pretty light and not overly intrusive, I'd say!

Those phone had a 1" b&w screen and I didn't bother playing games on phone.

It's not about how you look, its about having to wear such a giant headset. What's the big difference between this and the VR headsets from the 90s?

I won't wear glasses just to watch a 3D tv, and the same goes for playing video games.

Ah, have fun with more limited display options...

Not saying regular 2D screens can't do amazing things, just these open up so much more possibility, and I don't see why a person wouldn't want to wear something like these when they create such large amounts of realism.

Because too many games focus on realism rather than fun. And fun is the main purpose of games I thought.

You do raise a valid point here that I can't argue with! Meh, adding to the realism most certainly can add to the fun, but doesn't necessarily always do so...

I don't think a game necessarily needs to be "fun" to succeed. They can also be an experience. Take Slender for instance, there's nothing fun about it, but imagine playing this game with the degree of immersion provided by Oculus Rift.
The fact that you feel as if you are actually in the world will benefit most games, be it Minecraft, Half Life or CoD - just as a good atmosphere would.

All I can say is that I can't wait to play through Ravenholm with that brick on my head.

I want it, but I'm basing this on my VR920 headset I already have.

See, playing Half Life 2 with a controller and 3D headset is awesome - enough so that you would consider saving $300 for the same thing. The VR920's have quite small screens, they aren't comfortable, the nose clasp things for instance must have been designed by an idiot. But it's enough to make me realize exactly what I want from 3D entertainment.

Really, we need a big, encompassing screen, no looking through square poles like with the VR920.

Oculus check...

It has to be comfortable.

Oculus check...

It has to be compatible with a decent amount of games... Valve on board?

Oculus check...

After spending £250 on a VR920 - well the Oculus could be pink with pictures of Hello Kitty for all I care!

Imagine a mech combat game, or a flight simulator, or a racing game... a game that has the player sitting down is ideal - I can certainly see why the idea of VR is still puzzling given the lack of domestic walk simulation - but people need to forgo ideas of first person shooters and sports games etc. I mean, have you seen what some simulator fans do to build their own rigs? - 3 flat screens mounted on moving platforms... now take the Oculus rift instead, giving full 360 degree, 3D visuals. It doesn't matter if walking is still an issue, if you don't intend to walk. I have a little PS3 Gran Turismo rig setup in a cupboard, basically a good gaming seat and wheel and pedal set, flat screen. If I could add in an Oculus, then it'd be fricken amazing, and it's already pretty cool.

I'll be getting one - I don't care about the PS4 or Xbox720 or anything Nintendo is upto - I just want a good VR headset for playing non-fps games, simulators, racing and flight games. Hell, this might even encourage more developers to make some combat flight sims for a change, we all know how thin on the ground they are these days.

I got a fever, and the only prescription, is more memes.

Completely agree. People tend to dislike first person racing because of the restricted view, even though for me it's 100 times more fun, this tech would amplify that by another 1000 I think

VR headsets are always going to be a certain size because the screens have to be at a distance for the eyes to focus on them. There is a huge difference between the rift and the VR headsets of the 90's, that's a stupid comment.

It's not realism but immersion. Just because a world is 3D doesn't mean it has to be a modelled on reality.

I got a Rift today and it is certainly very fun, yet also still very much an early concept that'll take some time to mature into a fully immersive experience. The first time being able to look around a virtual world 360' with your head is quite amazing.

The downside to the dev kit is it has a low resolution and each pixel is very distinct, so while your brain slowly adapts to this it can still be distracting. The consumer version will have 1080p instead of 720p which should help quite substantially.
