Hmm, interesting. Well, you can tell I'm a JRPG whore by this list.
For me:
1. Final Fantasy VII
2. Final Fantasy XI
3. Secret of Monkey Island
4. Abe's Oddyssee
5. Sonic the Hedgehog
6. Nier
7. Lost Odyssey
8. Shogun: Total War
9. Resident Evil
10. Age of Empires
May seem like an odd list. But I'll list my reasons
1. Highly successful. I loved it to pieces when I first played it. I'm not a 'bestest game evar!' fanboy, but it is a massive RPG, which I think is pretty significant in the playstation era and is also my favourite in the series.
2. Okay, 2 Final Fantasys is a cheek, but this is an MMO and one that's survived for over 10 years on a subscription fee, never going F2P and they released their latest expansion last month. Oh and in those 10 years it has managed to continuously support the Playstation 2, though it has stopped with the latest expansion (except in Japan). The game is huge with lots to do and lots of variety. Sure it has a fraction of the players it used to. But it's a survivor, sure not of the same success of WoW, but having played both, I would list this as the superior game. There's a lot I could cover on this one, but I did write a
2013 review for this one.
3. Highly popular adventure game, with a great sense of humour that still survives today. Loved it as a kid, played it loads of times. Will it survive with Disney dropping Lucas Arts? Let's hope not.
4. An odd game, but challenging. Probably the best platformer I've ever played. Beautifully cruel. With the HD version on the way, hopefully it'll please a newer generation. It did when it went 3D, sadly. It was inventive and different from any other platformers, making it unique.
5. Another platformer, intensely addictive, even today. Heck, I even liked Sonic Generations because it still had a fun gameplay. Sonic the Hedgehog started it all, heck, I originally played it on the Master System. Also, it was highly successful and loved by many.
6. Not a hugely popular title, but underrated in my opinion. I think it brings to the table an excellent narrative brought on with fun gameplay tactics, which at times can be a mix mash of diffeent things, it is an RPG that has some shmup-like bosses. It's not afraid to go a little loopy on you (text adventure boss ftw!), plus the sound track is amazing. Probably the best RPG to come out in the current generations of games.
7. Also underrated in my opinion. It is the true successor to Final Fantasy in my opinion. Not many games are able to move me emotionally, but this game has managed to do that (like-wise, with Nier). I had a hard time choosing one, so I chose both. Yep, I cried at the end of disk one...I'll admit that and lose some man points.
8. I found it to be educational, but fun. I would spend hours on just the campaign map. As far as strategy games go, I felt this has topped them. And of course, Total War went on to being a great series of games loved.
9. The mother of zombie games. I think it is responsible for our love with zombies. Whilst the voice acting was god-awful, it was challenging, it wasn't just a shooter, but carried over many elements from adventure games, so requiring the player to be good with a controller AND to have a brain. I think it has had a big impact on me and games. The game felt restrictive, which really helped with the horror element, which I don't think has translated well into the newer games, sadly.
10. I think it has had a big influence in the strategy genre, I played all 3 religiously. The first one was the one that started it all. I found the series was better than other titles like Civilization, though I do like Civilization (I play Civ5 still).
