Even though this list came out a few years ago, it's interesting to look at. While I still play COD4, I think it's entirely way too high up on this list.
http://nintendoeverything.com/28230/game-informers-top-200-games-of-all-time/

So if you can make your own list (top 10 lets say, not 200), what would they be and what was your basis?

My top 10 choices will be on impact the games had on culture, social impact, and gaming industry in general (mostly).

1. Super Mario 3
2. Legend of Zelda
3. Command & Conquer / Warcraft
4. Doom
5. Unreal
6. World of Warcraft
7. Deus Ex
8. Diablo 2
9. Sonic the Hedgehog
10. Thief

Number 3 I consider a tie, because both were only about a year apart and its hard for me to say which really caused a bigger spark in RTS games. (Though AoE is still my favorite)
For number 6, while Final Fantasy may be the roots behind successful RPGs today, none have ever reached the level of fame as WoW, even if I don't like the game myself. With a few more choices, I may have added Mortal Kombat to the list and GTA. While Deus Ex won multiple awards, you don't really hear much about it anymore (apart from bad sequels). Still, the storyline alone I think makes it stand out and it's one of the few games I think truly deserves to become a movie. Thief makes the list for similar reasons, and adding new elements to the FPS genre.

It was actually quite difficult not to pick all 10 from the nintendo era.

Hmm, interesting. Well, you can tell I'm a JRPG whore by this list.

For me:

1. Final Fantasy VII
2. Final Fantasy XI
3. Secret of Monkey Island
4. Abe's Oddyssee
5. Sonic the Hedgehog
6. Nier
7. Lost Odyssey
8. Shogun: Total War
9. Resident Evil
10. Age of Empires

May seem like an odd list. But I'll list my reasons

1. Highly successful. I loved it to pieces when I first played it. I'm not a 'bestest game evar!' fanboy, but it is a massive RPG, which I think is pretty significant in the playstation era and is also my favourite in the series.

2. Okay, 2 Final Fantasys is a cheek, but this is an MMO and one that's survived for over 10 years on a subscription fee, never going F2P and they released their latest expansion last month. Oh and in those 10 years it has managed to continuously support the Playstation 2, though it has stopped with the latest expansion (except in Japan). The game is huge with lots to do and lots of variety. Sure it has a fraction of the players it used to. But it's a survivor, sure not of the same success of WoW, but having played both, I would list this as the superior game. There's a lot I could cover on this one, but I did write a 2013 review for this one.

3. Highly popular adventure game, with a great sense of humour that still survives today. Loved it as a kid, played it loads of times. Will it survive with Disney dropping Lucas Arts? Let's hope not.

4. An odd game, but challenging. Probably the best platformer I've ever played. Beautifully cruel. With the HD version on the way, hopefully it'll please a newer generation. It did when it went 3D, sadly. It was inventive and different from any other platformers, making it unique.

5. Another platformer, intensely addictive, even today. Heck, I even liked Sonic Generations because it still had a fun gameplay. Sonic the Hedgehog started it all, heck, I originally played it on the Master System. Also, it was highly successful and loved by many.

6. Not a hugely popular title, but underrated in my opinion. I think it brings to the table an excellent narrative brought on with fun gameplay tactics, which at times can be a mix mash of diffeent things, it is an RPG that has some shmup-like bosses. It's not afraid to go a little loopy on you (text adventure boss ftw!), plus the sound track is amazing. Probably the best RPG to come out in the current generations of games.

7. Also underrated in my opinion. It is the true successor to Final Fantasy in my opinion. Not many games are able to move me emotionally, but this game has managed to do that (like-wise, with Nier). I had a hard time choosing one, so I chose both. Yep, I cried at the end of disk one...I'll admit that and lose some man points.

8. I found it to be educational, but fun. I would spend hours on just the campaign map. As far as strategy games go, I felt this has topped them. And of course, Total War went on to being a great series of games loved.

9. The mother of zombie games. I think it is responsible for our love with zombies. Whilst the voice acting was god-awful, it was challenging, it wasn't just a shooter, but carried over many elements from adventure games, so requiring the player to be good with a controller AND to have a brain. I think it has had a big impact on me and games. The game felt restrictive, which really helped with the horror element, which I don't think has translated well into the newer games, sadly.

10. I think it has had a big influence in the strategy genre, I played all 3 religiously. The first one was the one that started it all. I found the series was better than other titles like Civilization, though I do like Civilization (I play Civ5 still).

10. Heroes of Might & Magic 2/3 (The best in the series, wished someone would remake these properly)

9. World of Warcraft (Who hasn't played this? Would be number 8 if the early game wasn't so boring)

8. City of Heroes (RIP - Why I wanted to make multiplayer games, should have been as good as WoW in-terms of popularity, but I find this smaller game had a more interesting early game)

7. Mario Kart (Was great fun, Mario in an alternate genre that is still good)

6. Need For Speed - Hot Pursuit 2 (Why I wanted to make racing games)

5. Street Fighter 2 (On the arcade systems, probably spent more money playing this than World of Warcraft)

4. Sonic The Hedgehog 2 (Why I wanted to make game levels; 2D level design at its finest (Sonic 3 had better graphics). This game squeezed the maximum out of the genesis; remember the laggy bottlenecks?

3. Counter Strike Source (Inspires me to make game maps. CS:GO looks good, buying soon)

2. Bubble Bobble (Commodore 64 - grew up on this; didn't need large game levels to entertain)

1. Super Mario 3 (Why I wanted to make games; Sega tried to compete with Sonic but the mismanagement of Sega spoiled it. Back in the 90s it was rear for video game adverts to be on TV in the UK; anyone remember the mario 3 advert?)

Would of put Age of Empires 2, Need For Speed Underground, Command & Conqueur Generals and Wolfenstein 3D/Return..Castle Wolfenstein, Worms 1 and 2 in there somewhere. Funny enough I quite liked Brian Lara Cricket on the Sega megadrive/genesis.

1. The Legend of Zelda - Ocarina of Time
2. Goldeneye 007
3. Half-Life
4. Super Mario 64
5. Super Mario Bros. (1 & 3)
6. Command & Conquer - Red Alert
7. Tony Hawk's Pro Skater (1 & 2)
8. Anno 1602 / 1602 A.D.
9. Sim City 2000
10. Battlefield 1942

Thinking about each of these games, I guess I could write a long article about each of them Also the order of this list is not final or representative. A few games are also missing that would definitly deserve a place: The Secret of Monkey Island, Duke Nukem 3D, Quake 3 Arena, Return To Castle Wolfenstein, The Settlers, Transport Tycoon, Sid Meier's Colonization, Super Mario World & Galaxy, The Legend of Zelda - A Link To The Past & Skyward Sword, Mario Kart 64, 1080 Snowboarding, Black & White, Worms 2...

IMO this thread is stupid by following reasons:
1. My totally stupid answer above fits this thread 100%.
2. This is not a poll with hundreds of voices so it can't show us even a roughly BOB games anyway.
3. Comparsion of games for different generations and platfroms is stupid. What do you like more - red color or grass?
No offence.

It's about what people here think and showing their opinions. A game discussions on a forum orientated to games. It's interesting to see what people's choices are. I don't think it's meant as a serious poll to represent any universifiable data.

It's interesting too, Phaelax's list goes on what he perceives as being the most successful and how it has impacted the industry and people in general. My list on the other hand was based on what I felt were good quality games that at the time of release, had some pretty special or defining qualities about them or with certain choices, their legacy.

Peoples choice of course will be down to how they judge a game's worth, which makes for an interesting discussion in itself.

At lest to make this thread useful, you all should group your games by genre, platform or else.

For example, a specific BOB strategies list would be much more interesting.

Anyone who doesn't have the original Half Life in their list, isn't a true gamer.

Also; Mr. Handy, tone your remarks down. You seem to have a propensity to jump all over people for no real reason at all. This thread isn't "stupid", and it was never claimed to be a study. It's merely for fun.

LOL Never played it; was busy playing the other games on my list.

The most I've ever played an official Half Life game was Half Life 2 for a whole 5 minutes.

I installed it ran it and said, wow, ohh ahh; where's counter strike. I'm just not into single player FPS games, just personal. Sometimes I just can't be asked to complete such games, I just can't be bothered to clock an FPS.

Wolfenstein 3D which almost got on my list; I cheated... I just played it to try out all the cool weapons. Something about single player FPS games makes me feel to lazy to clock them; more interested in getting multiplayer frags.

How about the original Wolfenstein 3D? I still remember how awe-struck I was over that game. Truly innovative for it's day.

Besides being a multi-billion dollar success with over 800 million sales; on a design level, Mario is art, there's a-lot going on in those games belief the surface as childish as they look; hours of fun with all with a limit of 8 sprites per row and 2KB RAM!!

Zelda, never played them; was too busy playing Mario.

I guess I will have to make a list to then

1. Battlefield 2 - The first multiplayer game I played. And I played it alot
2. TES Oblivion or skyrim - Both have got such a deep lore and unique gameplay that I havn't realy found in any other games
3. Empire earth - The first war game I played and also the most enjoyable "calsical" RTS that I have played
4. Minecraft - Probably the game that I have played the most, you can do so many diffirent things.
5. ARMA - The modding community is great and the developers intreact with the community in such a great way
6. World in conflict - A pretty unique RTS, to bad not many people are playing it anymore
7. X3 terran conflict - An extremley deep RPG where you have to micromanage everything
8. Empire earth 2 - A bit worse than empire earth 1 but it was awesome to play with friends
9. Battlefield 2142 - I didn't enjoy it as much as BF2 but it to was awesome to play with friends
10. Halo 3 - Realy fun playing with friends, the story was great and forge was realy awesome.

As you can probably tell, I am pretty new to gaming, concidering EE was the first real war game I played, and battlefield 2 modern combat the first FPS I played. So I pretty much missed out on games like Zelda or Half life.

I am glad that you able to compare World of Warcraft and Excitebike. What is better by the way?

Also, I would like to change word "stupid" to "makes no sence". I am not fluent in english.

It's an opinion based poll, so it's being judged by whatever people would consider to be better games, which varies person to person.

Could I compare Final Fantasy to Age of Empires? Probably not by gameplay because they are 2 different genres, but I can compare how much fun I had, how successful they were, how much of an influence they've had on me, people in general or the games industry, which is pretty much the tone set by Phaelax's post (where he's listed his own criteria), he's not told other people how to judge what they consider to be the best games, only that they come up with a list. At the end of the day there will be variations.

It's not meant to be serious, or scientific or anything like that. So it doesn't really matter how people choose their top 10, only that they choose their top 10. Everybody judges the 'best' by their own criteria, it's not really something you can do objectively.

Maybe. But for now this thread looks like a generic list of all famous games. I was expecting something better to read, so don't blame me.

My top 10 (in no order) favourite games of all time...

Skyrim - Hated RPG's until I played this game. Almost everything about this game is perfect in my opinion. Scale of the worlds, level design, graphics, beauty. Simply a beautiful game.

Need for speed Underground 2: What I believe to be the best street racing game ever. I wish EA would remake this instead of that stupid most wanted. I still play this now and own it on at least 3 platforms.

Super Mario 64: Ground breaking for it's time, again a beautifully put together game where everything has a reason to exist. I loved everything about this game, and still play it occasionally.

Zelda: Ocarina Of Time: The first Zelda game I played and still my favourite. I loved it's openness, it's scale and the story which kept me wanting to play. Like Mario, I play this occasionally on my N64, and my gamecube/wii)

Silent Hill 2: I loved how atmospheric this game was. It genuinely made me scared whilst playing, but made you want to keep playing. I've finished this so many times and own multiple copies across multiple platforms.

Forza Motorsport: I loved this game. I love driving games and love the choice of cars you get. Granted, it's a little boring after you've raced the same few tracks over and over because turn 10 never release track packs, only stupid car packs which won't work in any other version of the game so is a waste of money!

Pinball Fantasies: As crazy as it sounds, this game changed my life! I loved pinball games and this one was amazing. I've also never forgotten the intro music and still listen to it quite often.

Starwing: The ONLY reason I wanted a SNES. I loved it's controls, graphics, music. This game was awesome in it's day.

Gran Turismo: I loved this for the same reason I love Forza, but obviously I've been playing GT for a lot longer than forza.

Tetris
: Set the benchmark for pick up and play puzzle games. Everything about it was addictive. And it's Russian!

I live for video games! (And beers, and football, and cars!)

Minecraft doesnt look like rubbish, saying minecraft looks like rubbish is like saying "hey, pixel art looks like rubbish"

I do indeed enjoy the very simplicity of minecraft and I certanly dont think - never thought "oh man this looks like rubbish.."

You could honestly go either way. I don't think it looks like rubbish per se, but it doesn't look as nice as other games. But what could anyone expect? That's a graphical quality that works best for such a game. I'd agree, a high res minecraft does indeed look strange. Also, I could honestly care less about how a game looks. If it looks good, cool, but if it looks terrible but is fun, then it's a great game. Hence, I enjoy minecraft.

Captive (Atari ST) - Still play it to this day, when I should be working, on the STEEM ST emulator, I've spent more time on it than any other game, probably more than my top 10 games combined. That's my top spot, hasn't changed since 1991.

In no particular order...

Resident Evil 4 (GameCube) - It's not particularly scary, it's just impecibly done, that game doesn't shrink after the first couple of hours - it's 40 hours of intense gameplay. I thought I liked the first 3 res evil games, RE4 redefined the genre. I wasn't such a huge fan of RE5 and haven't even bothered with RE6... they don't have that atmosphere that the humble little GameCube could produce.

Harvest Moon, Wonderful Life (GameCube) - I lived that game , I'm not even a fan of Harvest Moon, the 2D games seem pointless to me after playing the 3D, microcosm that is the GameCube version.

Manic Miner (ZX Spectrum) - A technically flawless game, it's 20 levels that even the most hard core gamer would struggle with. But more because it defined the UK games industry, it was just what it needed to jolt peoples imagination about what they could do... before MM the Spectrum games were fairly ugly, overly-complex, there was nothing with any personality. The videogame industry owes Matt Smith a lot.

Halo (XBox) - Played through it so many times, remember it so well - the later games are good, but for me it was Halo that I looked forward to playing... the other games feel more like I was being dragged through them in comparison. It's like they try too hard to be epic, but Halo invented the epic FPS.

Black Tiger (Arcade) - Just a great platform, hack and slash arcade game. Never did finish it.

Bubble Bobble (Multiple platforms) - Easily the best co-op platform game ever.

GTA:San Andreas (XBox) - My favorite GTA game, for reasons that have probably been explained in several places by several people. I do like GTA4, I really enjoyed Lost & Damned, but I hope that 6 will be much more like SA.

Half Life (PC) - Where would FPS games be without it!

Dungeon Keeper 2 (PC) - It's what happens when you let Molyneux make the game he wants to make.

I got a fever, and the only prescription, is more memes.

I thought I liked the first 3 res evil games, RE4 redefined the genre. I wasn't such a huge fan of RE5 and haven't even bothered with RE6... they don't have that atmosphere that the humble little GameCube could produce."

So true! I enjoyed this game so much and spend many hours on my first playthrough. The whole rural Europe theme and the atmosphere was just amazing. And I didn't really care about the new games, too...

Mine in no particular order:
Call of Duty - I remember playing this on PC when it first came out and it was the first game that really immersed me into the story line and characters when I was young. I remember replaying the same level over and over again just to get a soldier I thought was cool not to die. It also spawned one of the most successful franchises ever.

Jedi Academy/Jedi Outcast - I played these games with my cousin countless times and I just loved everything about them. They had interesting story lines and who doesn't love star wars!

Harvest Moon (A Wonderful Life) - Bought a GameCube so I could play this game after seeing my cousin play it. I played it nonstop for so long. Still get massive nostalgia bursts when I think about that game. Sadly don't own my GameCube or that game anymore but tried to find an emulator to no avail.

Half Life 1/2 - Made me fall in love with shooting games after seeing a neighbor play it. Was too young to complete the story in Half Life 1 as I just sucked at games in general but the experience was still fantastic.

World of Warcraft - Played with friends for 6/7 years and finally quit last year. Still a brilliant game and met people on it that I still speak to every day to this day.

Warcraft 3 - The best game I have ever played. The game that made me want to program and make games. It also made me enjoy story telling and just generally creating things. The amount of custom campaigns and missions I made on World Edit is just too damn high!

Shoot didn't realise what time it was will continue later!

My top 8 in reverse order are:

8. The Sims - I sunk so many hours of my childhood into this game, although it was definitely more fun playing with cheats than properly.

7. Half Life 2 - The best gameplay experience ever when you play it, never found it to have much re-playability though which is why it's not higher.

6. Populous 3 - Great atmosphere, game was really fun, but the music sold me on this one. 2nd best RTS ever.

5. Mirror's Edge - Movement in this game is so fluid and free and brilliant, it's just a shame the story is a bit rushed-feeling. But it feels fantastic to play.

4. Just Cause 2 - Maybe the most 'fun' game, I love that JC2 chooses a cartoony feel and sticks with it the whole time, no consequences, just fun.

3. Beyond Good and Evil - Story sells this one, great characters, great atmosphere, but fun gameplay as well. Decent stealth, for a game aimed at early teens

2. Portal - I hate puzzle games, and yet I somehow love this game. Possibly because it has the best game story of all time, and the best execution of humour in any game I've ever play.

1. Homeworld - This game got me into games, I played the demo disk (!) over and over, and when I eventually got the game I played nothing else for weeks. The graphics are still pretty impressive for a game from the 90s, and the voice acting, mechanics and visuals are just stunning. The obscure first sequel, Cataclysm, had a better story and execution but less depth perhaps, but it was still great. And then Homeworld 2 was awful, which is a shame.

I'm not sure what I'd consider the best games of all time, I'd have to think about that.

I've been playing Metro 2033 recently and I think it's a great game, I'm surprised that it was part of a humble bundle at one time (that's how I got it). I heard the sequel comes out very soon, so that should be interesting.

I'd say the Final Fantasy and Metal Gear series have to be a couple of the greatest series of all time, although I couldn't pin that down to a single game in particular.

The Elder Scrolls and Half-Life series of course should be up there somewhere, both providing something that really had no parallel at the time.

If you are unsure what a particular area will do then please consult the Assistance Table at the bottom of this page.

It is difficult to put these in a definite order as many have elements that mix them up. However, here is my top ten.

1: Donkey Kong Country
2: Silent hill
3: Riven
4: Morrowind
5: Curse of monkey island
6: Half-life 1
7: Thief
8: Tony Hawk Pro Skating
9: Mortal Kombat
10: Super Ghouls and Ghosts

Donkey Kong country was Just plain fun, from end to end, it was difficult yet achievable, funny and imaginative. It has infinite replay value and I always really Identified with the heros. (I felt his pain when he discovers his empty banana stash, and made it my business to get them back for him)

Silent Hill is a masterpiece of atmosphere. It was the first game that I found genuinely scary. The mixture of story, psycology, sound, lighting and artwork made this game a significant experience so far as games go. The only downside is low replay value, I remember being relieved when I finished it and didn't have to go back there. Amazing game.

Riven was beautiful and masterfully crafted. Calm, quiet, slow, this is a game with atmosphere that permits spending an hour or two in one section slowly working on a puzzle. there is no drive to blast through the game, you are very much a tourist exploring their world, with puzzles on the side, puzzles I must say will challenge anyone greatly.

Morrowind was the first game that I every played that was open and free in its layout. I remember being amazed by the fact that it was simply a big open island and I could do anything I wanted, i didn't even have to start the story. A pleasing mix of action and lore, depending on your mood you can either explore the local culture, or run off swashbuckling and treasure hunting. I got lost in this game for longer than I care to admit.

The curse of monkey island is the funnest puzzle game I have ever played, its lateral thinking puzzles, brilliant humor and lovable characters made this one of the funnest games I have every played. I nearly died laughing the first time I encountered Murray.

Halflife 1 was revolutionary, the graphics were so good I couldnt believe what i was seeing. The advancment in ai was out of this world. I remember being extremely surprised to see the soldiers run, hide and backtrack around behind me. It was a massive step forward from the very linear ai we had before it aka. notice player and walk towards them shooting while making no attempt to otherwise defend themselves.

Theif is interesting in that it was the first FPS that discouraged killing. it was an interesting and new concept and it was quite a thrill to sneak around in the shadows and steal their well guarded treasure with everyone in the level non the wiser. It was the first game I had seen with photographic textures used and the drunk guards made me laugh.

Tony hawk pro skating was a very novel game. the fact that you could use everything in the level in quite a realistic manner(if you were a superhumanly good skater) the multiplayer was great too, with the time limits good enough to give you a real crack at getting a high score, while still being short enough to hand around your mates and all have a go.

Mortal Kombat was one of the first games that I played on a super Nintendo. It was a fun multiplayer or single player game and is in my top ten due to the sheer number of hours I enjoyed playing it.

Super ghouls and ghosts is there because it was a relentless onslaught of platformer frustration. fiercely unforgiving, it was hard, it had no save points and limited lives. The ending is just plain cruel, I will not spoil it for others. It was a good game.

I'm not a complete idiot -- Some parts are just missing.

I really don't see the point in compiling a list from subjective opinion and personal experience. This is just as meaningless as giving games review ratings.

It was also one of the first games to use Creative's EAX and surround sound, which is why it came with my sound card. One of the very few games that actually pulled me into its world.

DK Country was a very fun game, and I considered putting it on my list. I think I still have all 3.

I used to play that in the arcade a lot as a kid. You know, those big gaming boxes that were the size of smart cars.

And good job completly missing the point then - it's simply a fun thing, there's no specific point to it. Just having a bit of fun.

I don't think as intelligent people we would be posting our comments if that was the objective here would we?

As was stated, it is interesting to learn about games one has not considered before and to see how people think about their games; it is not like this a review database or anything.

Obviously a quick message on a forum isn't going to be 100% accurate, I bet if everyone played all of the games listed here, some of which at their prime time their top 10s would differ from one occasion to another.

I'm sure we all have purchased game or film with 90+ ratings that we didn't think much of. Some of the games listed here barely got 80+. Some games are called masterpieces but didn't make much sales.

All of the games here are well known. Or at least they will pop-up if you will search for "good" games for specific platform, because such known or popular games discussied well enough. How about best RARE games?

The best games can't be chosen, there are too many good ones. My list keeps changing.

In the end, it's just a personal preference. So here's my list of games I played to their death:

1. Conker's Bad Fur Day
2. StarCraft : Brood War
3. Super Mario World
4. Super Smash Bros. 64
5. Ratchet & Clank : Size Matters
6. Kirby in Dreamland
7. Half Life (and HL2)
8. Spyro (I, II, III)
9. Portal
10. Crash Bandicoot

My god, there are too many games I cannot list.

4. Donkey Kong Country 2
5. ...

That company couldn't do a thing wrong. Until, of course, Microsoft bought it.

Below is a list for games from 2001 on...
