I can't find a more appropriate section for this post so I'll post here.

I'm having issues trying to export anything from within Treemagic G3 on my windows 8 laptop, and a windows 7 machine.

Every time I click export, I get a memory access violation. I've tried compatibility mode, but it didn't help.

Does anyone have any suggestions?

Just letting you know that I have just tested treemagic on my windows 8 pc and it works fine. It also always worked on my windows 7 laptop.

besides reinstalling I am not sure how to fix this problem.

I'm not a complete idiot -- Some parts are just missing.

I'll try reinstalling it again...

But the version I'm using came from the Dark Game Studio DVD.

Mine came from the "Dark Game Studio DVD" And works fine on windows 7. Check to see if its a permission problem, Install with admin mode. Try running the program as admin.

So did mine. As an experiment I've just copied the whole of my old Tree Magik folder from my Vista desktop machine to my W7 laptop and Tree Magik G3 works perfectly without doing anything else.

Source folder on my Vista machine: Crogram Files (X86)/The Game Creators/Tree Magik

Destination folder on my laptop: My Documents/My Games Software/Tree Magic (yes, I inadvertently changed the spelling ).

No need to mess about with the cumbersome DGS installation procedure.

Edit Decided against trying to edit out the weird forum interpretation of the Program Files folder notation.

I always had to add it to DEP, could be an x64 variant issue

it always works for me after adding it to DEP, only add applications you trust to DEP!

I didn't have to do anything - just copy everything and run.

I just downloaded and reinstalled it with Admin permissions on the Win7 machine and it failed again. It'll work until I try and export anything.

Where did you install it? I've given up installing TGC stuff (and other vendors' stuff) in Program Files as it causes just this sort of issue all too often. I now install all my useful stuff in My Documents as shown above. In fact, in the TM G3 case I didn't need to formally install anything - just copied the old folder in its entirety (took just a few seconds).

Edit Just had a thought. What date shows on your copy of Tree Magik.exe? It shows as 6 Feb 2007 on my machines. I ask because I vaguely recall Mike sending me a different version of either Plant Life or Tree Magik at some point for some reason that I now forget.

I've installed it to a USB stick, and it's dated 6th feb 07.

Since I know how to get a working copy I'll see if I can reproduce Mobiius's issue by installing from my DGS CD - tomorrow though (it's too late for me to attempt anything clever tonight ).

Good luck. Ive installed from the DGS DVD onto my win8 machine, which failed across both machines.
And installed from a download onto a win 7 machine with the same results.

Do you have a working version on any machine? If so, you could try copying the whole folder as I've done.

Edit

Quote: "Good luck."

Thanks. Just tried installing directly from the DVD and things are working fine - but I did cheat a little.

This is what I did:

1. Insert the DVD (but took me a while to locate the case for the game dvd that was already in the machine ) and ignore all the prompts to use the builtin setup procedures.
2. Browse the DVD and find the TreeMagicG3 folder.
3. Copy that folder to the desired location on my PC (I used My Documents as suggested earlier).
4. Open the My Documents version of the folder, find the file TreeMagikG3_107.exe and install to your desired location in the usual way.
5. Run TreeMagik.exe.

I guess you could probably run that file directly from the DVD but since the above works and takes only a few seconds I can't be bothered to test. Similarly I haven't tried installing to the default Program Files location as that will probably end in tears.

I haven't tried installing to a memory stick though.

I now have two identical copies of TMG3 on this W7 machine and they both work perfectly.

Edit2 And just to rub it in :

That's the method I used, and I can run the program fine.

see. I just can't export from it, rendering it useless.

Yes, I know. Which export file format are you using and what are the symptoms? I'm using the first, i.e. .X format, without problems.

Are you selecting a specific folder to export the objects to? I had this issue as well and just used the default folder to export to. It would not export to any other folder.

No, I was trying to export to a root folder. (Either C: or J: for the USB stick)

Have you tried exporting to a folder in My Documents?

Edit Sorry - daft question. As far as I can see you can't easily choose the folder.

I'm at a loss as to why you can't get this to work.

Edit2 Out of curiosity I've just put TM G3 on to a memory stick and TM works fine from there too.

It works fine if I export to where It wants. As soon as I change the path it fails.

At least I can use it now.

Was that all you had to do?

I hadn't tried that. How were you changing the path anyway?

Yes.

In the (very unintuitive) export bit where you enter the filename, I just entered a full path. (I.E. C:\tree or J:\billboard)

But like I said, if I just enter a name, it works fine.

Yes, I get the same error when I try that.

As you say, at least you know what to do now. Have fun.
