A truely sad day for all metalheads. Jeff Hanneman, guitarist and songwriter for metallegend Slayer died on Thursday from liver failure at Hemet Valley Medical Center, near his home in Southern California's Inland Empire area.

Quote: "Slayer made the news public on Thursday afternoon, announcing that the band "is devastated" and calling Hanneman, who was 49, their bandmate and brother. Twitter quickly filled with messages from fans and fellow musicians, many of whom were in Los Angeles for the 5th Annual Revolver Golden Gods Awards show at Club Nokia. Disturbed/Device frontman David Draiman was among the very first, posting "RIP TO A TITAN OF METAL," while drummer Mike Portnoy wrote, "WOW...I'm in shock...RIP Jeff Hanneman.""

Quote: "Hanneman has been off the road since early 2011, when he contracted necrotizing fasciitis -- most likely from a spider bite -- a quick-progressing disease that literally eats away at the flesh from deep layers of skin and tissue. Exodus' Gary Holt stood in for Hanneman starting in February of 2011, while Pat O'Brien joined the band when Holt returned to Exodus during 2011.
It's not known what role the disease played in Hanneman's liver failure."

Quote by Dave Mustaine (Megadeth):
"Tonight one less star will be shining and sadly, the stage got just a little bit darker. Jeff Hanneman 1964-2013."

Many of Slayer's best-known thrash anthems were written or co-written by Hanneman: Raining Blood, Angel of Death, Seasons in the Abyss, South of Heaven, etc...

Slayer mixed - more than, say, other speed / thrash metal pioneers Metallica - punk with metal to a rapid attack on the eardrums, with amazing solos in which he and Kerry King constantly exchanged lead and rhythm guitar, while the tremolo arm shoots the notes in all directions. The aggression of punk with the ingenious little scale and bravado strings of metal: it has never been so uplifting, and it's actually still unsurpassed.

As a tribute to Jeff, here's a cover of 'Raining Blood' done by myself (a while back ). Rest in peace, Jeff! Thanks for the music! You'll be missed!

And here are a few vids:

There are lots of others I could upload, but don't want to overdo.

Sad he died. I wasn't a huge Slayer fan, but they've been a great influence in the metal world and it is a loss to the industry. I see 'you know who' are talking about protesting the funeral, which to be honest, would be an honour. I pretty much agree with the slogan, "Live your life so that WBC may picket at your funeral".

There's a few of us. Also, Lee Bamber is a big Megadeth fan, if that helps.

And you're from a country responsible for some very awesome and highly talented metal bands.

I had forgotten you'd done that. Sounds really good, don't think I ever got to hear the final version of it.

And now I like Lee even more.

There was one a long while ago (see my Music Discussion thread) but it died, pretty much after it turned into a thread only talking about metal.

Cool to see another metalhead on the forums. \M/
I knew there are other headbangers here, but wasn't aware you were also.
I'll never stop rockin' and headbanging and shredding, and I'd suggest you guys do the same!

Yup yup, why not.
As my friend budokaiman said, we had our music thread a while back, which turned into a metal music thread (well, most of the time ). We could have a new one, either about music in general, or one that's only metal related.

Awesome! Was thinking about doing a new cover of Slayer, but still unsure about what song.
Also busy doing a cover of Accept's 'Balls to the wall' (including vocals, which should turn out to be hilarious ).

Quote: "Sad he died. I wasn't a huge Slayer fan, but they've been a great influence in the metal world and it is a loss to the industry."

Yes, very sad. I grew up listening to Slayer, and never thought something like this would happen. 49 is too young for anyone.
Slayer (and also Metallica, Anthrax, Megadeth, etc...) had (and still have) a tremendous impact on how the metalscene sounds today.

Quote: "I had forgotten you'd done that. Sounds really good, don't think I ever got to hear the final version of it."

Thanks, bud! The version is a bit different than the original, but that was the intention.

Whoooaaaah, he is?
Thumbs up for Lee!!

Quote: "Lots of us here listen to metal."

Indeed! Doing that now, actually.

I think it was mentioned in one of the newsletters years ago.
