Germans would say "Yif"; Spaniards would say "Hif". I can't believe that is really the reason but it was called Cif in continental Europe while it was still called Jif over here. Why do I know this incredibly dull crap?

This is supposedly the "proof" that GIF is pronounced with a soft G.

This proof is however faulty and make the assumption that the correct way to pronounce something is up to someone other than the person or group of people pronouncing it. If that were the case, multitudes of local dialects and accents would be wrong, as opposed to just being different.

There is no difference, jpg is simply just a shorthand of jpeg, if you will.

Which raises yet another question: is "Cif" pronounced "Sif" or "Kif"? Perhaps they should rename it Gif and end all this idle speculation...
