What would be a better way to setup spells.

Partical's or using billboards.

I always use video but it really depends on what you want them to look like. If you want ultra realism I'd go for video.

Not worried about "realism" So will take a look into partical's. Any links you can suggest to read up on them please.

Well, I think partial sprites would be the way to go, This is what I did a long time ago, it worked great. If you buy the sprite pack, there are many examples in the pack that will help you build a system of spells.

I will have a look into the sprite pack, When I have some extra cash. Rather use a partical system if possible.

You'll still probably want to create your own particle system using billboards, as if I remember correctly particles always display over solid geometry even if they're supposed to be behind something. Unless that got fixed somewhere along the way?
