Hello everyone,

I'm new to the forum but not new to the website. I've been interested in DarkBasic since i discovered it in 2008 and have been subscribed to the newsletters and visiting the site periodically since then.

I'm interested in finally purchasing DBPro and have some basic questions before I get started. Let's get to them:

Is DBPro compatible with windows 8? The system requirements don't mention windows 8.

What "addons" will I need to purchase to create 2d games and/or isometric games?

Thanks for your help!

Yes, DBPro will work fine with Windows 8 if you take care of 2 small problems:

1. DBPro requires DirectX 9. Windows 8 does NOT come with DirectX 9 preinstalled. I think that is the same for Vista and 7 but I am not sure.
The reason for this is that Win 7 & 8 came with DirectX 11 and Vista with DirectX 10. Both of which are not downwardly compatible, so you and the people using your games might have to install the DirectX 9 runtime additionally if that hasn't been done by some other game's installer. Otherwise starting your game/executable will result in an error stating that some directx dll-file is missing.
You can find a complete redistributable package here. I think you can add it to your downloads as well but better make sure on the M$ site.

2. Starting with Win 7 SP1, M$ has introduced some changes to the UAC security settings which will prevent any game you create from running on Win 7 SP1 or later (probably also Win 8). So you MUST install the DBPro Patch RC 7.7 before you can compile anything. You can find that here
People using your games won't have to do anything here, but as I said you need to have the patch installed when compiling.

If you get those 2 out of the way DBP will work fine in XP, Vista, 7, 8 and even the 8.1 Preview, both in 32 and 64 bit.

None. You can create games with plain old DBPro. But you should probably download the Advanced 2D plugin. It's free.

One last thing though..

I apologize in advance for the double post. I did not see my topic in the list and assumed it had been deleted by a moderator... so I reposted it again as another topic... I apologize for that mistake.

Thanks for responding to my questions! Westmere - huge thanks for clearing that up for me.

Mobiius, from what I see TGC is asking $49.99 (USD) for what is called the Studio Bonanza. I see (now) that the free version contains advertisements and does not come with a commercial license.

This bundle contains: DarkBASIC Professional, Dark Lights, Dark AI, Dark Physics, DarkBASIC Electronic, Dark Shader, eXtends, Treemagik G3, Plant Life, DarkMATTER 1, DarkVOICES, DarkGAME Studio, FPS Creator FREE.

What's your opinion of having all the add-ons? Do you have these add-ons yourself and if so are you actually using any of them?

Would the Bonanza package include a commercial license, or is that extra?

Finally, regarding 2d games... I see there is BOX2D, and the 2D PLUGIN KIT. Can anyone tell me more about these?

Thanks for your help.

No, what happens is that new posters have their first few posts moderated/checked before they are allowed to appear. After a while you should see your posts appear without the delay.

Welcome to the forums.

Yes, you don't need anything other than DBPro to get started. Once you've been using it for a while you'll have a clearer idea of the extra things you need. In the meantime several bits of additional software have free demos that you can try so I guess my advice is:

1. play with DBPro for a bit to get an idea of what it can do
2. browse the site to see what else is on offer
3. post questions on relevant boards (you've done that already )
4. have fun.
