is this limit for the TOTAL size, or can we use the EXE with a PAK file... and have a PAK file of any size?

You can have as many files as you want but the final submitted ZIP file must be 15mb or less.

You can do anything to your files, but the submitted version has to be <15mb

The ruling of filesize is for downloading the finished games off the net so it is an overall filesize of 15mb maximum to download your project and everything needed to run it.

If you can compress it so heavily that you get 600mb into 15mb, then so be it. Because only 15mb would be transferred over the net to play the game. Also if you can do that, can I have your compression routine plz k thx

You can achieve a midly smaller size by first zipping and then rarring your creation.

People should note that the Compress Media option will often halve the size of exes

winRAR compresses better then winZIP, uncompressed my game is 20.5 MB and compressed with winRAR it's 3.17 MB, with winZIP it's 10.2 MB

I found winrar to generally produce slightly smaller sizes than winzip, recently however I descovered 7zip which dribbles on both from a great height, sticks a red hot chilly pepper up their bums and boots them into high orbit with an oversized baseball bat.

That 7zip is pretty good, although it is VERY slow at creating the archive file. Luckily it is quick at extracting.

The alien compo rules state you can use any archive package but not sure TGC even know about this one!

In my test, my alien compo folder with all sorts of backups, textures, objects, etc is currently 35mb.

Winzip = 28.4mb
WinRAR = 23.8mb
7zip = 19.9mb

Hopefully TGC will allow these 7zip files as it means some people can squeeze in a few extra files.

I forgot to mention, it uses a very very very big baseball bat, with nitrous injection, go faster stripes, and a goffer strapped to the end.

5. Your game can be compressed in any way you see fit (ZIP, RAR, ARJ, etc).

so you could even use your own compression program, as long as it is possible for them to get it. But I suspect they expect ppl to use only widely known compression fomat, like those they named.

And instead of worrying about compression format and all, the best is to use compressed/small sized media (JPG/MP3/MOD instead of BMP/WAV) and a game design that don't need tons of different medias.

My game is at beta-testing stage and it is
10MB uncompressed
7.38MB sitted
7.35MB zipped.
6.63MB rarred

I really think about adding in a 8MB divX for the intro or maybe as an easter egg ?

Currently added a screenshot feature to my game.

2.62 MB uncompressed

Each screenshot takes 2.99 MB of space.(Might switch to .JPG )

I have a question though. Say, if Rich were testing the game, and my game was at 14.99 MB, and then took a screenshot that bumped it over the limit. What happens then? I'm thinking everything will be okay, but I just want to make sure.

once the game is on the player's computer, no one cares if the directory gets bigger. but the original DL must be <= 15MB. that's all. feel free to let your game bloat itself once it's on the player's drive!

The rules are pretty clear, not sure where all this confusion is stemming from...

A recommendation to people who are finding ZIP isn't cutting it small enough: Use 7zip. 7zip beats ZIP, RAR, ACE, TAR, and all those other compression programs. It is the elite. And it is freeware. And it can extact virtually all compression types. And make them. But the 7zip format is its paramount feature.

A very nice %it, indeed.

Yes, you CAN program Windows and enter it into the competition - the alien model could be used as a helper wizard who conveniently pops up and lags your computer out to suggest restarting just as your trying to click save on that critical word document...

I sent an email to Rich asking him what compression programs you could use, he replied,
Quote: "I don't care less what compression program you use as long as the final game adheres to ALL of the rules"

Just to make things clear

Flick that switch...*BANG*...Not that one!
