I want to distribute a DarkBasic game and I imagine some people who will use it do not have DirectX installed (or not the most current version, or something like that). Can they still run my application? What is the absolute minimum of DirectX files that I need to include in the distributiuon (e.g., d3dx9_31.dll, d3dx9_35.dll, what else?)

Thanks for any replies

since DBP supports only DX 9.0, then you must have latest DirectX 9.0c installed on your machine (even if you have windows 7, and DX10+) and yes, u CAN install both DX9.0c and DX10 on same machine.

no need to include any files of those u mentioned as long the DX9.0c is installed on the machine you runing your game.

if you look into professional installing system E.G InstallShield, you will find that there is an option to include DirectX 9.0c to your installation in case it doesnt exists on machine.

you also can make your own installation systems like step by step before playing your game..

i hope i explained most of the questions of yours

Thanks Sergey. But I still have a question: can I (or random user) bypass installing the full DirectX and just include a couple of dll's?

Its against Microsoft's eula to only include certain files like that. Its all or nothing I'm afraid.

The web installer would be your best bet.it includes only the installer, and none of the files for the smallest file size.

I'm surprised no one mentioned the web-install distribution package? It's about 500 kB in size and will install DirectX 9.0c Aug 2007. You can include it with your game when you distribute it.

UPDATE: Actually, you're not allowed to distribute it.

In any case, this will be of interest:

Do not redistribute the DirectX Web Installer, simply point users to the Microsoft Web site. "

I would include a simple HTML page with a link and title it DirectX 9.0 INSTALL.
