hmm, at x or y axis you can scale it small upto 0 and scale it normal with cosinus.
the 2d view is Orthogonal.
maybe you can combine a 3d sqare in 2d, i saw someone use it in a 2d side scrolling shooter.

when i rotate it on the Y axis with the same values
when it goes all the way down it suddenly instead of being upside down is the same as the first frame..

like ive attached an image with a simple man texture
when the head gets to 0 point where you hardly see the sprite i assumed it would go -1 so the head will be lower then the body like a flip state..

the sprite only have a front side, you can use two sprites
and remove the abs and add 180° at the second sprite or you use
SetSpriteFlip at 90 degree.

(at a negative scale the sprite was invisible.)
