Hey all!

So hopefully someone here can help me out. I want to create an adventur computer game for my boyfriend, that's personalized. I have some experience working with varying programming languages (C++, C#, Java, Python) but I'm pretty busy so I'm trying to find software that will help me. There are a ton of good ones out tehre, but I'm not sure which would be best for my purposes. I'd like to have one that can do:
Personalized images (so his character and other characters can have their own faces/etc)
Multiple levels
Decent graphics (they don't need to be super good but i'd like more than just 8-bit pixels)
Ability to place objects/bosses in his way and have them fight

So! Anyone have suggestions? I'm hoping to keep my budget for this under $100, but I'm willing to work with it since I'm pretty sure he'll love it.
Thanks!
Kat

Gamesalad is pretty much a pick and tick style. You add the game resources amd your away. Not pushing you away from AppGameKit but you mention time is precious . Coding takes time no matter how you look at it

Maybe GameMaker:Studio, though a bit out of your price range for the full version.
Construct 2 is a good cheap one.

And of course TGC has a few good ones

Thanks for the advice, guys (or ladies).
I checked out Gamesalad and it looks like it's pretty easy to get around and that I could program the game on my computer (it's a Mac, don't have a lot of access to a PC). My only concern is the graphics -- I really would like to have nice quality graphics, to the point where I can stick someone's face on a character.

RPGmaker looked pretty simple as well. My only issue with it is my lack of a "gaming" computer... if I partitioned my HD or loaded Bootcamp/Parallels/whatever on my Mac, is it possible I'd still have enough capability to run the software on there?

I'm still looking, but thanks for the advice so far!

how easy would it be to incorporate graphics done in something like artrage into another game-making software? I might have missed something but it looks like artrage is just in terms of making graphics.

It depends kat' - ArtRage supports layers, but it might be a little unweildy for drawing character sprites or textures. For backdrops though, it's great. I think the ideal project for ArtRage would be an adventure game with hand painted backdrops, like a point and click game, something that needs a lot of nice backdrops without too much hassle or skill.

Maybe a turn based game would be nice. Like a map with icons for each player, then painted backdrops and characters for the battle scenes. Should be quite straightforward to make, no burdon of having to keep things fast and slick, and plenty of scope to personalise it, add in private jokes, mutual friends, whatever you can be bothered drawing really. For a project like that, well AppGameKit or DBPro is probably fine. AppGameKit has quick and easy font handling and straightforward sprite and image stuff, I'd say you'd get results really quickly in that.

I got a fever, and the only prescription, is more memes.

Van B,

I had looked into DBPro but I wasn't sure if I would be able to run it on my Mac with something like Bootcamp or Parallels. I will look into it more.
I definitely would like something similar to what you described, where I could fit in jokes that only he would really get and where I could add in "guides" with the faces of our friends or his mom or something haha.

Thanks for being so specific!

the most used interface are png images.
so it must export as png from artrage.
artrage used his self document format that other software can't read.
layers are very useful because you can paint without destroy
other parts from image.
also possible is a background photo and paint with this
colors where the pencil begins.
here is a demo link of this painting software:

katrijnn, for a game in agk you need imagination, time and know-how,
if you rate as possible, just try it

Also, worth noting - I think you can get ArtRage with a Wacum Bamboo, I got it with a Bamboo One, was about £40 I think, a pretty worthwhile investment I'd say - and the version I got comes for Mac or PC.

If you need it to run on a Mac, then DBPro is probably not ideal. I'm not sure how AppGameKit runs on a Mac with Bootstrap - but there is a Mac player for it, so it might not matter in the long run, you could make a version for PC, Mac, iOS, Android... you never know, personal indie games have a history of making news.

thanks for the web site I think I will buy a soundtrack from rpg maker, for my game. they sell them for cheep 21 sound tracks for 5 bucks, and it is very good quality sound tracks. They also sell spritesheets for cheep. I got some spritesheets that I have already bought, but I need charactors.

Van B,
I think I'm going to try and chat with someone who has DBPro and AppGameKit (someone from the company) and ask what their deal is -- it seems like they would have some option for Mac users, even if it's just to bootcamp it.

Markus,
Roger on the graphics. I definitely want to get creative with the backdrops. My BF is in the military so I want to have the game start in the desert (similar to Afghanistan) and end in a very green, heavily wooded area (similar to our home). Thanks for the tips!

It doesn't need to. It'll run just fine in XCode.
