Finally, here we got our own thread for

Into the Ice

We are rolling out the first Alphas for ITE in August, these are still created in X9 and their main purpose is to show some new Gameplay elements in action.

As soon as the first rolling FPSCR hits our dev stations, we will move to Reloaded. This means that all visuals and assets used now are in no way final quality.

Story:

Yes, you are Pete O´Brannon again, aka Peter Brenner. After your glorious failure in the final Level of Into the Dark, you were rewarded with 2 Mio. $. With such an huge amount of cash at hands, you rushed to a tropical island with your female sidekick Samantha. You thought your investigator days were over...

...but you were wrong.

Agent Smith, who had monitored and led your previous operation, re-activates you to infiltrate the secret base in New Swabia, Antarctica, the origin of the mysterious UFO and the Nazi-styled soldiers who hijacked the data in the final battle of "Into the Dark".

But first, you have to get into the British Rothera Station in Antarctica to rescue Agent Jonathew Iustin Conner, a Romanian-born, now US-citizen - and CIA field agent. As he is the only one who knows the exact location of the entrance to New Swabia, the CIA finds it VERY disturbing that contact was lost to Rothera Station 2 days ago. Time to get in and find out!

Screenshot 1:

So, what´s new?

In addition the same amount of trash, bad jokes, pop culture references and a totally inbalanced mixture of Adventure and Shooter, we will have two additional gameplay elements:

1. You can freeze to death.

Well, now it´s not "to death", but you can freeze to a state where you are so slow that movement becomes almost impossible. How does it look like?

Well, the first sign is you are getting slowed slightly and the screen gets the first pieces of ice:

You can de-frost yourself by finding sources of heat. If you don´t, you will end like:

As there are 18 stages between those two, you have time to react and heat yourself up.

2. Fasci-Nation:

This is something very special, and I don´t want to reveal all details right now, but basically it can lead to Peter turnign his cloak and joining the New Swabia troops.

How can you get those X9-based Alphas?

Well, there are 3 options:

1. Buy "Into the Dark". All Desura ITD customers will get the Alphas.

2. Buy your ticket in the upcoming Desura Alpha funding, Indiegogo and perhaps also Kickstarter campaigns.

3. You are one of the masterminds and great contributors here - in this case I will send you Alphas occasionally.

Estimated Release:
End of 2014

Here some additional screenshots:

Pretty awesome looking stuff here, always pushing FPSC. I never could play Into the Dark, but I'm sure it is a great game. There's just a level of professionalism about this one (well . . . somewhat ) and quality that just takes it a step beyond.

For no particular reason I'd just like to throw it out there that I'm a mastermind and great contributor

Are you refering to the characters or segments?

Characters are bought: The 341 Model pack and JFletchers civil soldiers. All are reshadered, some heavily re-textured.

Segments are usually self-made or retextured, as well as static entities. The basic detail level is achieved by using high-res HQ HD textures, the overall visual detail level is achieved by applying various overlays and scene composion.

@Wolf
i was refering to the textures

and @Ertlov thx
for the explenation
thing is
when i compare my models and textures
from zbrush to fpsc
i usually end up with a not satisfied results in fpsc
now i do get that tweaking till the last drop of blood left my body - is the only way to get it the way it should look

so i really hope that FPSCR is going to make things easier
when it comes to lightning and shading

Yes...me too. Since all the objects are using "normal" textures the only things you could be referring to are either the segments or the characters. (which look really good by the way. Except...well...I have been drunk before, but never face-tattoo drunk )

You should open up a thread about it so we can take a look at it. I dont want to hijack Ertlovs thread but I'm sure we can help you with this. It is likely that you have a lot of detail in your normalmap which will likely be a bit "fishy" in FPSC. Other users that worked with sculpting software had that problem.

@Ertlov: Are you sure its a good idea to put all that work
in an X9 prototype. I mean, this will likely be useless once reloaded is out. (if reloaded will be bugfree and ready to use right away that is)

It looks better than into the dark so far. A lot cooler.

This is a very good game and very hard the game play is damn good and the texture work is awesome.

I like to praise you for the amount of work you put into this but I would advise to pack it up in something like vishnu packer or something to protect your media a bit, plus it makes it smaller to download.

Small Update:

We are now in the middle of quite demanding recordign / sound effect work, so Into the Ice FPSC-Alpha is a little bit delayed. However, there will be some exciting news soon, as well as the presentation of a new gameplay element called "last stand".

In the meantime, enjoy this picture:

What trouble do you come across with vishnu as I would like to hear as many of the problems with it have been fixed in newer versions.

Nice new screen shot.

Just packed the game in vishnu and ran fine in my test machine's one even an old 6 year old machine.

J0linar, right now we are testing if gameplay elements we have in mind work out in the reality of ingame combat. As a side effect, we create a lot of assets we hope can be used in FPSC-R, too. However, all visuals like full screen shader etc will change anyway when moving the project to FPSC-R.

I did some minor tweaks on the texture, but the main reason are pre.calculated and then manually optimized normal maps and the use of the Lambert_Subsurface illum_Fresnel_Hemisphere_Shadow.fx shader.

Well it was posted here on the boards for general usage, so I sincerely hope so. I have already used some tweaked versions in my own games.

In the meantime, we have started an IndieGoGO campaign for Into the Ice. It´s still kinda stealthed as we won´t throw PR in before the -30 days point, however you can of course contribute and collect perks right now.

There is also a Youtube Promo Video for it:

Hi guys, sorry for the lack of updates, but as Lee has revealed in his last blog entry, I have joined the dev team of FPSC-R and I am in charge of the sounds, so I have to distribute much of my working time to FPSC-R instead to Into the Ice - which makes perfectly sense, as the ITI game itself will be rolled out on FPSC-R.

However, there will be a great announcement, news and Playable of "Into the Ice" soon!

Thx a lot!

The problem is that the release of the Alpha was originally scheduled for 30th of September, and I had estimated that my work for FPSC-R will be finished then. This estimation was wrong, and now they started selling earlier, so I have not the time available to do proper PR & Marketing all day long
I even haven´t written a PR statement yet.

Any word-of-mouth help like sharing the Link on Facebook and telling friends is heavy appreciated.

When I think of Into the Dark, I think of overpowered normals. It's kind of a warm and fuzzy feeling. Fuzzy and warm in the 'giant tentacle monster is trying to kill me' kind of way.

Although I might consider this to be a bit overshadered and stodgy with fps rates in the screenshots in the 30's, This is the most next gen looking FPSC game I've seen thus far. It compares easily to a low budget early PS3 title, and for the price you're asking, it's not a wonder it's popular.

Well, I still ran into issues with merging bonds segment and static entity shader into one universal look, I had some problems with the memory cap and of course I still have some mirroring artefacts within thebigger tiled textures.

However, we won´t fix this here anymore as we are going to Reladed now.

Good news, everyone!

You are about to deliver this package of weapons-grade plutonium to the Planet of Doom and No Return...

...oh, wait, wrong script. Let´s do that again...

Good news everyone!

1. Indiebundle.org has packed the Into the Ice Alpha as Upgrade-Icing to their latest bundle cake: If you pay 7 Bucks instead of 5 for the Package that includes The Horror at MS Aurora, Grave Digger and our trashy masterpiece "Into the Dark", you get the Enola and Into the Ice Alphas!

2. There are still some days left to join our sole brave heroic 3-bucks-investor from the north @ IndieGoGo to get other package deals you may like.

3. The first Into the Ice Alpha reviews and coverages from smaller games magazines and Bloggers are coming in slowly, and, hell, read for yourself...

4. Someone from the German Gamestar Forums made ITE screenshot slides next to those of games that were top-notch 2-4 years ago. Yes, you all were right, we have heavily overshaded, but it´s still interesting:

Really nice work! This game is a real potential to be the flagship game for FPSCR. But I hope the gameplay and experience matches the graphical fidelity that this game provides. I hope you iron out the weak points of Into the Dark that gives it so much crap complaints and insults from people not into Indie action games. IMHO, better and more relate-able voice acting, a more thought-out story, well developed characters, fun missions with good flow and fluid gameplay is definitely more important than glossy graphics and a gun-porn action packed gameplay with no flow whatsoever, even for a trash, b-movie game. It'll really help gain some respect from a much larger audience out there and even give FPSC and your games a better and more positive recognition it deserves.

This is kinda like my opinion of Into the Dark But I really like the game and see a lot of potential for your next installation. Into the Dark is a 5/10 game for me right now but with so much more efforts, Into the Ice could actually compete with some of my favorite commercial games out there.

Your games looking great so far!

What resolution images are you using for your segments? Are you using 2048? Or even 4096?

2048 or 1536, depending on what it is.

As long as you mean the weak AI, clipping errors, falling out of the world - then, yes.

Erm - no, it isn´t. Without at least some elements of cheesyness it would be another futile attempt to compete with games 100times the budget and 50times the manpower.

What file type do you use for your image maps? I have tried to use larger image maps, but, I find it has a huge effect on FPS.

This is EXACTLY what makes the Into series what they are!
