Hello everybody,

I bought DBPro a long time ago, maybe 2003/4. I also bought DB Classic. For some reason I chose to program in DB Classic but I can't remember why. I have multiple sclerosis and my memory has been quite badly affected. I wrote some freeware educational programs in DB Classic and they went well. They were used by schools and others all over the world. I would now like to get into doing a little programming again, it might keep my mind going.

However, with DB Classic I always had d3drm.dll problems and I think that I will not have this with DBPro. Am I correct?

Today I have been trying my DBPro CD, copyright 2002 and it seems to work OK. Should I update DBPro, how do I do this and what would it cost?

I will also try to solve my DB Classic d3drm.dll problems so that I can relaunch my web site with my old programs on it, but thats another task and I think that I know where to go with it.

Thanks for any help, Rob

DB Classic uses DirectX 8 I believe, whereas DBPro uses DirectX 9.
Therefore the dll's required by users to run programs made with them would be different; d3drm.dll seems to originate from 1997 (!) and is as far as I know not required by DBPro; can't remember even downloading that and it isn't included by Microsoft starting with Windows Vista.

Since the current DirectX version is 11 however, most newer computers do not have DirectX 9 installed by default either and your users might have to download a barrage of other dll files (the DX9 runtime).

Updates for DarkBASIC Professional are free and available from here.
I would suggest you to update, there should be lots of fixes and added features compared to the CD version

Well, thats an overwhelming vote so I'll update today. I won't be producing great games though, just enough to keep my brain awake.

Thanks for the advice,

Rob

I followed the link to update DarkBASIC Professional given by Rudolpho and, at first, it all went well. Then it seemed to get stuck Building Keywords. The message, "There was a problem writing the keyword cache file, ensure that the directory that Editor resides in has write permissions.

If you are using Windows Vista (AND I AM) then you should either;
1) Run Synergy Editor with administrative settings
2) Install Synergy Editor into a directory that is not locked down by Vista security"

It kept on Building Keywords for 5 or 10 minutes until I stopped it. I then tried searching for Synergy Editor, in this forum and on the internet but had no luck. The addresses I found could not be opened.

Does anybody have any ideas? I am retired so normally I would be in no hurry but I am going into hospital(no WiFi) on 13th August and I am hoping to get started with DBPro during my stay

Thanks, Rob

The easiest thing to do is to install it into a sub folder in your "My Documents" folder instead of in your Program Files folder I guess.
Or ease up the user account control settings in Vista, just google that. In my opinion it's much better to turn it off entirely; it's your computer, why should access to "system folders" be prohibited? At least if you're logged in as an administrator anyway (which I think most anybody is on their own computers).

Thanks Rudolpho, I turned off user account control settings and DBPro is up and running. Now I'll need to get down to learning (or re-learning) it. Life is great!

It's bets not to install DBP into Program Files for this reason. (I've put mine into C:\TGC\DBPro which has annoyed my OCD no end! lol)

Your signature has been erased by a mod because combined it's over 600x120

Glad it's working

@Mobiius: So just turn the junk off; no more chagrin...

Hello friends,

I did get started with DPPro but only just when I ran into problems. Sometimes, when I try to run a very simple program it crashes with the window, "Please insert the Dark Basic Professional CD-ROM, select OK and restart application". This would be the 2002 CD-ROM, I assume. On the desktop "FAILED TO VALIDATE COMPILER" appears.

When I updated DBPro the old version was not removed. Should I do this? I hope that this is all that is wrong but fear that life might not be that simple.

Thanks for the advice basjak. Unfortunately, I am down with a heavy cold today and tomorrow I am off to hospital for two weeks. It's nothing serious. I have multiple aclerosis and the local MS clinic wants to assess what they can do for me. Unfortunately the hospital has no WIFI so I'll have to wait until I come home and carry out your advice.

You don't need to remove old versions when updating, (i never do.) you do need to validate dbpro after updating however.

I've mucked up everything. I deleted everything containg the words, "DarkBASIC Pro" I then went absolutely crazy and emptied my waste basket. Please don't ask me why. I don't know.

I then got notified that some more answers to my problems had arrived and I knew how silly I had been. I went on to try to load my 2002 DarkBASIC Pro I failed miserably and remembered why I had shosen to write in DarkBASIC classic

Now I am going to do what I should have done earlier. I'll go off to hospital for two weeks. I look forward to coming back in two weeks and being rescued!

You are not alone. While I was composing this reply I somehow closed my browser and had to log in again.

Don't worry, we'll all still be here.

Hope the hospital trip works well for you.

Green Gandalf: Sorry to drop in uninvited and hijacking the topic. But I was wondering if you could please point me to the terrain texture splatting shader created by you that works with Advanced Terrain and
Blitzwerks Terrain. I have found many people in the forum stating that they are using GG's terrain texture splatting shader but was unable to find the thread where the shader was released officially.

I'm not sure which of my terrain shaders you mean. The obvious one is the following one which I posted on the BlitzTerrain thread recently, but there are others:

Green Gandalf: Thank you for the shader. Is bump mapping better than normal mapping in increasing the surface detail or is it otherwise ?

I think it's actually DirectX 7. Skeletal animation was introduced in DX 8, but DBC doesn't support it, so it must be even older.

That was actually a hidden fake code-snippet with a logout link.

I don't think it was. I have difficulty controlling the mouse precisely and probably hit the browser close button by mistake.

Happens all the time , well about once a day anyway.
