Okay so me and my mates are looking into making a game we are strolling towards a game sort of like resident evil lots of exploring and all that but just with no enemies we have not decided what we want as enemies yet, we do not know a lot about game making but we just wanna try make some good games and hopefully get some good money to help us make bigger and better games we do not expect the game to be finished within a week.

Well I guess im just trying to ask if anyone knows some good software to make games on (really for pc but we wanna try consoles to!) my friend is really good at graphics on the computer and in real life we want something that does not limit us to basic graphics we wanna be able to edit them freely.

We are a team of 2 we just need some software but please do not recommend Unity or UDK we are willing to spend a long time on this and any advice would be greatly appreciated thanks.

If you don't want to use Unity and I assume you want to use TGC products you have a few choices at the moment.

1-DarkBasic Professional - Can produce high quality games and gfx and has a massive number of plugins (free and paid) to help
2-FPSC - If you want more of a drag and drop and first person game (third person is possible by using mods I believe). Also FPSC reloaded is on the way with much better gfx and a ton of new stuff
3-AGK - does not have full 3D support yet but if you get used to DBPro and want to move to a cross platform product you should be able to do so later

@mr Handy-

Yes, The 3D Game Maker (T3DGM) is a fantastic professional design tool from TGC. It wraps all possible combinations of game content creation systems into one convenient package. If you can afford it, you will have an automatic game-making factory in your own home.

Hello sonny285, I had a similar idea to your game idea, you are welcome to discuss further in private [email] as not to disclose anything you do not wish to publically...

On another note welcome to the forums, and your new second home

Oh yeah, so true! Check out its product page:

But seriously, if you guys are just starting out with game development, why not stick with Unity for a while to get some prototypes done first?
Sure, try Dark Basic Pro or Dark GDK but then you're limited to Windows PCs (which is the majority anyway). In my opinion AGK is just too immature at this stage and 2D only.
I think the Leadwerks Engine is becoming an attractive alternative. The Torque Engine is free now too and very professional.
If you can live with using Java (which is fine for beginners and professionals alike) there is the JMonkeyEngine (my personal favorite) and Ardor 3D.

So you see, there is a ton of alternatives...

I'll be frank with you sonny285, according to the terms you used to describe what you want to achieve I guess you dont know anything at all about making games.

The truth is that your first game will be very simple and basic. You will need at least a year to get into it and find your field of what you want to do and then get together with a bunch of other people and start an actual project.

You are going to be cheering once you got collision coded at first...or have an animated door in your game. (I know I was when I was working with a bigger engine...that door sure moved!)

The thing is that to make a game you have to start from gound up.
However, the basis/engine/ground structure of your game is the thing that needs to be most robust. It is its core. So your first and probably second game will likely be prototypes. And you will need up to a year to make something like resident evil or any other game "with lots of exploring". Especially if you want it to look nice and play smooth.

Your only chance to do this is either wait for some easy-to-make hype coming up, where games that are quick and easy to do are suddenly "in style" (cellphone games, slenderman style horror games). If you work on a unique or based on AAA title kinda game, you will likely not see any funding because there is no way you deliver a project that will get published without experience.
If you start, you are best of starting with the sake of making games or focus on a simple gameplay idea or story you always wanted to make something creative off.
If you already plan on something like "resident evil" which is extremely generic in style and story, you will likely not find a paying audience for a lesser resident evil.
Try to make a new game instead Maybe you deliver a hit like minecraft. Its possible.

Go ahead. Try the big engines. Try CryEngine. Its not UDK nor unity.
You can also try FPSCreator. Its a great tool to start with and find out what you are good at. Its also the most easy to use software because outside of FPSC or RPGMaker or something, making games is a technical process. You make software.
So there rarely is any software to make software. Game engines are usually a collection of code and applications to work on it/make it easier to work on it. The visual aspects are usually made in third party software like p.ex. Blender. At the core of it is usually a coding language. And if you use an engine, there will be coding...even if you use FPSC...the easiest one around: There will be scripting.

(keep in mind that if you make a game, you make the graphics, you dont edit them. This isnt modding) Also, if your friend is really good at graphics, it would help me to know what kind of "graphics" he has planned. Is he a modeler, a texturist, does he do materials?

Ah! So you have no experience and your friend does "graphics"? Sorry, to recommend you anything I'd have to know more.

For a start: why not udk or unity? Whats wrong with these?

If you are willing to spend a long time on the project then I'd suggest something like Unity or UDK; while they may take a while to get grips with you can get amazing results with much less effort than writing an entire engine yourself, and both of them are very well documented and supported.

If you're interested in the programming side of things then either of the above mentioned still apply (using Lua and UnrealScript, respectively), although DBPro is somewhat simpler and is fun to play with. It's free, and as far as I'm aware it doesn't have any licensing limitations.

DBPro (TGC) gallery: http://www.thegamecreators.com/?m=gallery
Unity gallery: http://unity3d.com/gallery
UDK gallery: http://www.unrealengine.com/en/showcase/

Bear in mind that the media displayed in these showcase images (at least, the Unity/UDK ones) was generally created by professional artists, so don't expect to get the same results unless you are working with some serious skill on your team. You could probably achieve some fairly high quality stuff in DBPro with the right skill and dedication.

My opinion: Dark Basic Professional or Unity. Dark Basic Professional especially! And whet your pallet programming on https://www.khanacademy.org/cs. After you've gone through a bunch of tutorials try looking at my programs just to see what the website is capable of. Or, things like this, this, or this are neat with short and sweet source code.

And yes, it's a ton of work, but do it anyways, it gets to be addictive, and this forum (geek culture and the dark basic professional board) can be very, very helpful!

Seriously, Dark Basic Professional. I recommend it.
