Hey Everyone,

I thought I would start a discussion about storytelling within video games.

Recently video games from AAA publishers and indies alike have become more serious in their storytelling. I am not saying that this is a bad thing but considering that the only 2 good silly, funny, off the wall, how ever you want to put it. That have come out as of recent are Saints Row 4 and Far Cry Blood Dragon. That is saying allot.

I guess you can argue the same for the Movie Industry.

Is this just me?

I like story telling. I just don't like long cutscenes that takes you away from the gameplay. If story is good than it'll make it good unless you have enough senseless action to "wow" the crowd. lol senseless action does make certain games or movies enjoyable at times, but stories are what moves my emotions.

If you want good storytelling and good games, you should check out the indie scene.

There is a bit of a contest going on at the moment to see who can be the most "gritty" and "real" and have the dullest colour palette. I guess they are trying to make games more 'mature' but they're going about it in a juvenile way. Look at the Japanese market, everything is colourful fantasy and adults play those games. Trying to look grown-up is the most childish thing you can do.

I don't think it's so bad if you're at a job interview.

pft - Victoria 2 / EUIV / other paradox title - I make my own story!!

no but - I can agree to some extent - however, we have seen more title s that does Serious - in a good way - The walking dead for example - but, we also see games that are mindnumbingly serious - like CoD or BF3.

but - i cant say that we have "oversaturated serious games" - most games i play feel lighthearted - and yet serious. Mass effect and whatnot for example.

12 year old girls/girly guys with lead-paint hairdos wielding swords bigger than themselves that create shockwaves and blasts of light absolutely not being any less mature, no?

I'm talking about the kind "trying to appear mature" like buying a Harry Potter novel with one of those special "adult" covers (example) because you're worried that people will judge you for reading a children's book. Real maturity is not giving a crap.

I cant honestly say that the harry potter books are childrens books - other than the first...

Here you go, let off some of that seriousness and have some fun:

http://store.steampowered.com/app/217140/

It looks gritty and dull with a drab color palette but it's filled with campy humor.

They dont try to make games and stories more mature, they try to make them seem more mature to teenagers.

No, you miss the point. Tone and settings suit it just fine and its a mature game. Gears of war on the other hand is a good example of an immature game because its geared towards young teenagers pretending to be for adults only. The last of us is geared towards young adults.
