Lol. After you read my more recent posts, you'll understand why!

I'll remove it shortly though, it's only a little joke.

It's okay, my friend. I knew my extra clicks to log me back in were worth the joy you got from it!

You forced me to see the forum in its ugly blue theme though. >=|

I've already removed it. Since it was so short lived I hope people see the funny side.

I know I did. (I even clicked on it myself to test it, so that's gotta count in my favour, right??)

As long as everyone who fell for it feels the same way, I'll be OK.

(But I am expecting a little ban, and it'd be deserved. lol)

No, I removed it as soon as I knew someone fell for it. I knew it was bad when I had to work around the forum telling me not to be a numb-nuts! lol (Which made me giggle just as much! lol)

I've got to admit, the first time TheComet got me with one of those I was so tempted to post something like.

Aw you got me, my face (image stretches page)

Only with the link leading back to the same logout trick (probably through tinyurl first) I decided against it though.

TheComet got a slap for posting the logout link. I wouldn't use it again if I were you even briefly...

from one who's fallen for the "logout link" here more than once, i'll say that i found/find no humor in the grief i've experienced as a result of trusting links to be posted responsibly.

it's immature and irresponsible, and disappointingly so when i see users that i respect, appreciate and, frankly, admire for their programming skills and sense of community in sharing it on this forum, "go there".

it is a disguised hyperlink which logs you out of the forum. some dont remember thier login details to get back in again. some dont have access to the original email account tied to the forum account to get sent the details/reset them

recovery? wow if you cannot remember your login details or even have it stored, which it should be... just double click the username field but hmm, at least it is not THAT damaging of a prank... but yeah I can understand the sense of maybe it was some sort of hack attempt which I can relate to as being somewhat mischievous, so yeah you should apologise then

Anybody got a screenshot of what this clickable thing looked like?

Yeah I'm not seeing the big deal. Don't remember your username/password? Your fault. What happened if you HDD failed and you lost the cookie anyway.

It was unfortunate for me because I had only cleared my browser history (including cookies etc.) a day before, and didn't realise I had reset my forum password previously (due to the same trick, probably from the same person) and hadn't yet set it to something memorable again. And of course it was at the same time that Hotmail decided you couldn't link accounts, so I could no longer access the e-mail account that was used for it.

In that case I'm going to pop round to your house at random occasions and format your HDD. If you lose any data its your fault for not backing it up every day.

Why is logging out of the forum such a big deal? I seem to do it accidentally about once a day.

but, i don't

it's a hassle. nothing major, but irksome. the first time, "clever trick!" then, not so much after that.

personally, i have always reset without issue, but i'd rather be doing something else for that 2 minutes.

and, i always stress on whether or not i'll be able to "get back in" = no fun (computers don't always act like i expect them to & i don't want to be disallowed of my forum fix, in full glory ).

so far, unnecessary stress, but i can't speak for (still) Benjamin's scenario.

Id agree, if you create an account anywhere at all, it's your responsibility to recall your account login info.

I disagree. As a minor example, when I log in on a new machine I have to log in twice because for some reason the first login screen doesn't accept my username and password but the second one does.

This is not up for debate, it is a slappable (new word?) offense. It's funny only for the person who posts it, for everyone else it's annoying.

If you do something that is annoying for everyone other than you (or most other users) then you will get slapped. I didn't apply a slap this time but other Mods may well have done and may still do so. Anyone who wants to take that chance is welcome but you have been warned.

Oh I'm not debating it, I agree that it is indeed annoying.

I'm not sure I understand your example, though.

I mean, if you buy a house, isn't it your responsibility to remember where it is? Kind of an extreme example but I think the principle still applies.

Yes, true but you're missing my point I see that now.

My point is simple: Don't do it because it's annoying.

If you really want a valid example it's like hiding the keys to someone's house and saying they should have kept them somewhere safe. They can still find them but it's a pain and not funny for them, Ok?

Aye, I'm actually not even talking about the log out link anymore. I'm simply saying, a very plain and simple point, people should recall or have some way to access their log in info to anything which they may ever need to log into. Do I think the logout link is annoying? I do! Do I support people pranking with it? Nope!

Of course it is the person's responsibility to look after their login info, as it is the responsibility of forum users to not post links that only cause aggravation

I didn't say that. I am wondering why you are laboring the point that people should look after their own login details in this thread if you agree that the logout link is annoying though?

It's common sense that people should look after their own important data, where exactly are you going with this point if you aren't trying to make the logout link seem less of an issue?

You started this debate by agreeing with Phaelax that it's a person's "own problem" if they don't remember their details ergo. their own problem that the logout link causes them distress... which again implies you think the logout link is ok.

THAT is why I am making sure to agree with you regarding responsibility over login details BUT point out that the logout link is still wrong. It's not just for you it's for others too who might think that by agreeing with you I am condoning the link.

I think I'll just slap the next person to post it and lock the thread in future so people don't debate it, that's what most Mods would do (and now I see why).

Thread Locked

This thread has been locked for the following reason: It has become a pointless discussion. I think we all agree that posting a logout link is a pain, any further discussion is off topic.

AUP Section 3.17 ...Moderators shall, at their discretion, determine what constitutes a violation of these terms, along with generally accepted netiquette standards, and can take action against those who violate these rules.

If you contributed to the reason for locking, you may now find yourself on moderation, or in extreme cases a ban.
