Hey DJD64, wanna buy me one?

I heard about this a while back, I think I'd prefer the Martin Jetpack though

The "flying car" is nothing more than a plane with fold-away wings. When it looks like a car I'll get excited.

Who wouldn't want a jetpack though!

We've seen cars that turn into planes before, and boats, and it's never practical.

But for the sake of it being Friday...

Yeah!, science!.

I am the one who knocks...

Seems like more of a drivable airplane.

But this folds into a fully road legal car. I'm not sure if previous designs were road legal.

Good point, and I personally don't care how it looks like most probably do. If anything, I actually think it looks pretty epic.

With a strong wind current, I'm sure it will lift off the ground

You just need magical powers. Then you can make any car fly. Wings are for the lame bunch who do not posses magical powers.

This one came half a century before. You had to keep the wings in the hanger at the local airfield, but apart from that it was a flying car from the post WW2 era.

A flying car in my opinion would be a normal looking car, that could take off like a harrier jet and fly like a plane. This is just a plane which is made to also drive on roads, not actually a flying car.

Yes, it's an airplane that suffers from having to be road legal. A cheesy plane and a bad car is not what one would look for in a flying car.

I'd want it to look like a car, but that would fly, probably have the wheels retract and thrusters come out for you to vertically take off, then they rotate and you are able to fly like a plane.

I think the key aesthetic design requirement is that while in car-mode one should not be able to tell that it is also an aeroplane, and vice versa.

This is an excellent idea for a 3D model challenge!

Not going to happen, it's bad enough on the roads without letting all those idiots loose in the air.

Is it not really plainly obvious that you'd need a pilot's license?

Yes it is and its also plainly obvious that you wouldn't be taking off and landing from highways either....so whats the point of all this?

Also, given the fact that most drivers seem to think once they have a license the whole reason for achieving it no longer applies. I suspect a pilots license would become just as irrelevant as a driver's license is today if this 'took off'. Check out the figures for 'near misses' by air traffic controllers who have enough to deal with as it is and you'll get the idea.

If your suggesting this is aimed at current pilots convenience so they dont have to get out of the car when they reach the airfield I don't buy it....it's aim is to make the average person who wants a flying car think it will happen....nothing less. And for that reason alone I think it's the daftest idea I have seen in a long time and common sense tells me it's not going anywhere, except in a small way and as an expensive toy. Which as pointed out above has already been done and went nowhere....so again, what's the point in it?

Do recall that pilots licenses are really expensive and require a lot of time to come by! And I do like your pun.

I'd agree with you, this isn't too practical. But it's cool and not being developed with tax dollars, so it's awesome yes?

rolfy brings up a good point, aside from the opinions on whether it's a car that flies, or a plane that drives, and how ugly it is or isn't...

what is the market for this? I was an air traffic controller for the US Army and I still know many pilots today. I can't imagine any of them looking at one of these twice. Perhaps in the outback? or Alaska? And then, is something like this capable of handling extreme conditions?

What do you imagine the target market for this might be? Crop dusting for him and grocery getting for her? Dreams of becoming the next 007?

I am the underground.
