I can't get the animation from 3DS to .x format.

I have sifted through many message posts.

I have used the Microsoft Converter, and tried a 3DMax exporter plugin.

The only character I can loop frames on is the Alien ware supplied .x file.

I have tried many models that do animate in 3DStudioMax, and all do not animate in DBPro.

What the hell do I need to do to get animations to export?

Please help.
This is becoming a road block on my competition submition.

Thanks for any help.

He who can give me the answer gets a free candy bar.

I don't know if this will help, but this is a tutorial my roommate (Lokidecat) wrote on how to export a .X file from 3DS R4 that supports bone animations.

Great thanks.

That plug in got me somewhere finally.

I found this animated hound dog that exported with all of its legs crunched together. But at least it animated! Whooo hooo.

Now I need to make some animated Soldiers and try to get them working in my game.

Thanks again.

I'll still take any more advice form anyone.

Hm. To my knowledge the 3DS format is crap for animating. ALL of the programs will export a 3DS for each frame. X format supports animation (might even have bone, considering older darkbasic showed limbs from the x files).

As for popping the alien model up anims and all, I dont know what you should use. Milkshape3D is good with exporting animations in X but i dont know if it does with with the limbs.

If you dont mind remaking the animations, you can use Milkshape and import the 3ds version of alien dude. Dont have to re-map the texture even.

'ALL of the programs will export a 3DS for each frame'

Milkshape, possibly the most commonly used budget modelling tool, dosen't. It exports properly animated ones.

Not that the format isn't godawful. I'll take .x any day.

A very nice %it, indeed.

Use the converter supplied with DarkBASIC to convert animated .3DS models to animated .X models. I know it works, because to add my own anims to our alien buddy I just loaded the supplied .3ds into Max and made my changes, exported as a new .3DS and converted that to .X - worked perfectly.

Also, there's a secret command in DBClassic to convert a model to .X.

I have three .x format exporters for Max, they're all good for different things. Or should I say, all bad at something.

In addition to that I also have 3D Exploration and Deep Exploration to convert between file formats for when I really can't get Max to export my .x object.

And I dont even do limb animation within Max. I have Character FX for that.

3D model formats suck, the industry needs to learn the meening of the word 'consolidation' or 'standardisation'.

Have one format for the TV mega poly "I found the smooth tool" nutters, and one for us people who understand what true art is.

Thanks everyone for the input.

I went ahead a bought Dark matter 2.

At least it had the animated .x models.

I'm a long time programmer but newbie modeler.

Without any plug-ins for 3DS Max all I could do was export to 3DS and then run a converter to .x file.

The Microsoft supplied one with DirectxSDK was not getting any animations. I can not find the converter in the Dark Basic Pro folders.

The plug-in mentioned at the top of this thread was the only one I have found that partially worked.

It animates my models, but all the limbs get smashed to the center of the model when I load it in DBPro.

I'm still frustrated.

But I can't waste anymore time. I need to finish my game for the competition. I would still like to be able to get my model animations from 3Ds Max to .x form exactly as I made them.

So any links to plug-ins for 3D studio max 5, or more reference material for newbies, would really be appreciated.

Thank you all, and check out my game after I submit it.

It's called "Alien OnSlaught".

Good luck everyone!

The limb vacuum problem is due to corrupted pivot points, basically the .3ds to .x converter your using is not very good.

The DBC supplied converter is definately the best option, Deep Exploration fails miserably everytime I try it with an animated .3DS model, so if you email my hotmail account I'll reply with the converter.
