load object "sky\sb.x",1

This 'sky-object' is pure black, no blue color or any color.
What could be wrong? shouldn't this object load properly and if not
how come? I have windows 7, could that be why?

Is the skybox properly texture mapped? Is the texture in the same folder as the x file?

No the problem is in the sky X file. For some bizarre reason the file expects BMP images but the files are DDS images. Just replace the "sb.x" file with the attached and everything should work fine.

Well, all the files are correct the way they're supposed to be, I would think.. after all, it's an example in the DB-pro download.

The entire example works o.k., however the sky is black. I have tried 2 other skys using the .x format, but they didn't work either.

There are 6 DDS documents, which I don't understand what they are. They are named as: sb1,sb2,sb3,sb4,sb5 and sb6.

Then, there is one 'DirectX document' entitled 'sb.x'

What do you mean "replace the sbx file with the attached"?

How do I do that?

I said "sb.x" not "sbx".

In the usual way, i.e. just click the download button and use the Save As option to save the attached file to the folder where you found the original copy.

So would I - but they are not. Just do what I said and you should be fine.

oh, i see, you have a file I can download,

THanks, now the sky is white. That's better than before. Now I want to modify it and make it a blue sky.

What's a good program to use for that?

I have a nice sky bitmap, can I turn that into a sb.x object ?

maybe 3d world studio? Or, I should modify the dss files.
..

It should be blue with white clouds, i.e. something like this:

No, just 1 frame is blue sky and the other 4 frames are white sky.

That is weird - but what do you mean by "frame"?

Well, if you move the camera around, the sky is a sky-box, right?

It is an inverted skybox or sky-sphere with 6 frames, or sides. On each side is pasted one picture.

As you can see in the 'Sky' folder in the example 1702, there are 6 dds document images. These are the 6 small 'images' or 'sky photos' that are pasted on the sky-box.

The sky-box is then placed over the terrain. So, when the camera moves around on the terrain and faces different directions... it is looking at different images on the sky-box.

So, when the camera faces different directions by using the left and right arrow keys, it sees different frames of the sky. These frames are numbered in numerical order in order to connect without detection one large oblong photo of the sky.

One frame might show the sun rise in sky and other frames show darker areas of the sky, perhaps in the west part of the sky if it is morning time.

So, that is why I only see one frame of sky because the other four frames on the sky folder, for some reason, are not being shown on the 3-d inverted sky-box mesh-3d object.

Oh, now it's working. It looks like I just had to include the dds document files in my media files list. It's working now.

(dds files- sb1.dds, sb2.dds, sb3.dds, etc.-etc. to sb6.dds)

My application is a media application. I just had to put the dds documents in the media files extension list.... by opening the 'sky' file and double-clicking with the mouse on the 6 dds document files to include them in the visble media list of the editor.

That's what was wrong with the project. But why didn't the editor notify me that it could not find the dds documents? I mean, why no error message? That was confusing.

Maybe the editor should give error message like..'Cannot load dds files', or 'Cannot locate dds files'.

But, important thing is it works now, thanks for your concern and helping out.
