I'm in one of those classes and I kind of agree. I asked him what he thought about that, and he said that the people on the forum are better than him. Plus, I've seen the sheer number of people who need help in my class, and I don't think he would ever be able to answer all of the questions.

Well, we do have the combined knowledge of 1000 procrastinating nerds on here.

There's nothing wrong with helping, but if it becomes code-feeding then it doesn't really help anyone.

Well, giving help is always good, help they can use and learn from, but when reading some of those threads, I do think they are very young... at least inexperienced in forum use.

I'm a math teacher by profession and I think the same thing when I go on Yahoo Answers and people are asking for help with math homework. If their question is phrased in such a way that I see that they have tried and are either stuck on one part of the problem or that they want to know if they did it correctly, I'm happy to help. But I see a lot of people who simply copy/paste their homework problem into the question box and expect the internet to solve it for them. I'm convinced they never even bothered to read the problem first.

I'm in a different class but ask for help here because my teacher told us to do whatever is necessary to find the answer i.e. he wasn't telling us how to do it. I've read the book and looked at DBP examples but still get lost especially since I'm new. So, yes, I'm trying to do it on my own before asking. Yes, I'm trying to learn from people much more experienced than I. Yes, I'll learn from this info and not just copy and paste it into my homework. Thank you to those willing to help.

I'm for helping. All the teacher has to do is asks each student to explain what the code is doing in specific parts. If the student has trouble explaining then the teacher would know for sure if it was just copied from the internet. Copying and pasting only copies the code... not the knowledge to understand it.

I am curious to know which school they are all from, and who the teacher is. A college class is what got me started here, and I have stayed here ever since.

Unrealistic in practice. Few teachers have the time to do that. For a class of 30, questioning taking, say, just 5 minutes per student would amount to 150 minutes, i.e. one and half hours.

Well in our classes using C++ we have to account for every line of code, but we use splitted classes for this and are supervised by 3 People. ( These classes are called practical exercise. You arent allowed to take the exam at Semesters end if you haven“t completed all of them.)

where can i get one of those clocks?

as piratejohn said, there's a big difference between "here's my code. i'm hung up on the part that..." inquiries vs "i found this code but it doesn't work" (much less, "gimme the codes!", which some will put in a lot of effort to disguise, on occasion).

otherwise, pseudo-code or direction toward certain commands (or explaining them) is generally the most-appropriate response, i'd say.

I'm on Yahoo Answers a lot and yeah, it bugs me too especially when what they post isn't even a properly worded question but simply a cut and paste from some assignment sheet. One recent question read like this: "Create a school records program." It didn't even say what computer language the student was using. I 'LOL'ed in his text input buffer.

If the question looks like they are willing to try but just don't know where to begin, I'll simply suggest a structure or outline.

When I see a genuine question about how to get started in game programming, I always forward them here.

The answer to Life, the Universe, and Everything? "Tea for Two". Deep Thought was Dyslexic.

The best course of action is to troll the copy-pasters. After they've been publicly humiliated a few times they might start to pay a little more care and attention.

It has to run though, even a lazy copy-paster will test their code works, so it has to be functional but embarrassing. I remember a thread a while back where we were competing to see who could write the most over-engineered function to clear the screen. Something like that!

Sick of it. 90% of these people either post their entire code and basically ask someone to tell them why it doesn't work with little to no explanation, or expect someone else to code it for them. Rarely ever respond to the thread, either. If I was the teacher I'd flunk them.
Also most of the questions have already been asked and answered by someone else in threads on the same page.

New sig coming soon..

Most of them belong on the DBPro newcomers board in my opinion. We need someone to moderate this board properly.

Agreed. Perhaps move the newcomers board to the top of the "Darkbasic Products" Section so it cannot be missed.
