I may sound stupid, but, what are .BSP and .FX?

You're lookin' at the ZOE2 freak, y'know.

.BSP = Binary Space Partitioning(?)

That means generally Levels. Indoors mostly.
Like all Quake and Half-Life maps use .bsp's. And many other games too.

.fx = FX shader
is a Pixel or Vertex Shader, that uses your Graphics card to create neat effects. There are different levels, like 1.4 and 2.0 - where the 2.0 shaders are supported only by the latest, fully DX9 compatible cards. Usually you need a good gfx card to get the latest effects.

BSP stands for Binary Space Partitionning.

The concept was created by The Carmack for the first Doom, and had later evolved to Quake levels. (HL1 is built on the Q1 sources, btw)

BSP means the level contains some data about nodes and leaves. All the level is partitionned into sub areas to accelerate the collision and the visibility process.

Generally BSPs are limited to indoor areas, but out door can be simulated easily like they did for Return to Castle Wolfenstein.

Nah. Carmack didn't invent BSP. He was just one of the first to apply it to a game.

The history of BSPs can be found at point 23 on this web page : http://www.opengl.org/developers/code/bspfaq/
