I might be, I don't really know, but using DarkBASIC and AppGameKit have helped me in more indirect ways.
I'm a mechanical design engineer and the product I work on has lots of automated monitoring and control. Being able to code games in BASIC and being exposed to some of the more technical jargon on these forums has helped me understand what the control software guys are talking about. Simple things like knowing what an integer and word are, for instance.
Tier 1 (or any type of BASIC) is also very good for learning general problem solving skills. And making games is very good for learning how to plan out a project and to see something through to the end. I actually think tenacity is probably more important than a good coding style.
I can fully understand people thinking of Tier 1 as a beginner's or prototyping language and then moving on to something else but I don't really have any desire to go beyond BASIC. I'm more interested in game design and making things move about on the screen. DarkBASIC and AppGameKit are very good for this, they're very flexible. I do my best to keep my code clean and ordered but I'm really not that bothered. Whenever someone starts to go on about coding things properly or professionally, I just kind of shrug and think "What does it matter? Make games. Have fun." What I think when people starting moaning about the limitations of either is something I can write here.
Anyway, I seem to have hijacked this thread a little. Erm...? So Jeff, what's your favourite colour?
one of these days I'll come up with a better signature
