I just lost a program that had over 4000 lines and all I have is the backup file for it. I am wondering if anyone could help me with changing the backup file into code. PLEASE HELP, If I can't get back my code, then I would have lost over a year's developement with my game.

Open the backup file in Notepad, copy & paste back into the original dba file...

I have to ask ... if you've worked on something for a year, why aren't you making copies of it 'just in case' anyway?

I backup to another machine nightly (full backup friday, differential every other day), and every-so-often I dump my whole development directory and my source control system to CD. At under 30p per CD it's well worth it

I should back them up from now on. My problem is that I have the file, it says it is 115 K, but it is empty. Even the backup file is empty. I sure beats me.

The backup file is rewritten every compile, so if you don't catch a terminal crash fast it too will be overwritten.


God created the world in 7 days, but we're still waiting for the patch.

I presume you've had a look at the files in Notepad - sometimes the editor says a file is empty, but its not.

i don't know, but I just gave up on it and started working. I finally found one of the earlier versions and started off that, I still lost about 2500 lines!

If it says that the file had data in it, yet when you open it up in notepad, there is nothing, then there is either somethign wrong with Notepad, or something wrong with windows for telling you that there is info in teh file when there isn't.

I suggest copying the file, renaming the extension to .dba, then open it in the editor, if that doesn't work, instead of renaming it to .dab, rename it to .txt and open it in notepad.

I suppose it could be cross-linked, so might be worth doing a scandisk. However, whether you do that depends on the size reported by Windows - if its only a few bytes then its a near empty file.

thats too big for notepad. Best simply to rename it .dba and see what happens. The worst case senario is "nothing" which you currently have already. You could try with wordpad, but that sucks.
You also should try having multiple modules too.

MAKE A BACKUP!

I know it's not workign for you currently, but, if you don't make a copy of that file you have now, and then accidentally do sometign to the original, your work is definatly gone forever! But, if you have a back-up, you won't lose it at all.

Also, if you can't get it to work on your computer at all, try it on a different computer, coppy it to Floppy and give it a whirl in notepad (or wordpad) on another computer.
