This is one of the neater things I've seen lately.

After a quick test, these color images seem to map perfectly onto a sphere but not only that, it looks like you can also select the 'greyscale' option and generate some quick heightmaps too. Perhaps this is not the intended use, but imagine all the potential applications for this.

Simple 3D planet with separate cloud sphere (atmo-sphere) wrapped inside a nice, crunchy star-sphere.

Normal maps work better. If you take a greyscale image, and use the Nvidia normal map generator the planets look even better.
