Quote: "Who the hell goes (by choice) to Alaska?"
Well, someone who likes to go wild animal spotting (bears, moose, bald eagles, lynxes, foxes and lots of other critters) and who likes beautiful scenery and a place with a whole different attitude than the lower forty eight and who likes the last full service railroad. Oh, and the Northern Lights can be spectacular!
I was lucky enough to get a job with the Alaska Railroad Company. The Alaska Railroad runs the last whistle stop train in the United states. They handle both people transport and freight. And, as far as I know, they are the only railroad that still does both.
We started falling in love with Alaska back in the summer of 2008. By the third visit, it was definite love. By the fourth visit we knew that we wanted to live here. By the seventh, we were determined to be here, no matter what, by summer of 2014. On the last, eighth visit, we decided to buy an RV, sell our house and spend 3 or 4 months driving up with the cats (seeing lots of the country on the way). So, after we bought the RV (a cherry condition 1999 Winebago Brave), I landed the job with AKRR and had to be up here by January. So, I am here and my hubby is back in Virginia. The house has been packed up and our stuff is on the way. He is now doing all the painting and such to get it ready to sell. And I have been getting used to working an 8 to 4 five day a week job after being self-employed for more than 9 years. And, finding some time on weekends to drive around looking for animals and enjoying the scenery.
Cheers,
