g'day all, from down under

as some of you might already know, i'm making a skiing game. well i have my skier dude all textured and skinned... his legs work nicely, but when i move his arms, its as if something's causing his shoulder bones to move in weird directions (they shouldnt be moving at all!)... either that or the position of his upper arm bones is wrong.
he looks fine in 3dsmax...

i've been playing round with this for hours, i even rigged a complete new skeleton for him... and i have the EXACT same problem!
im using 3dsmax 4 with the panda exporter...

i would post some pictures if i could find a server to put them on... but if anyone can help im on messenger: [email protected]
send me an email if youre not on messenger...

thanks, i hope someone has an idea as to whats going on, im at the tearing hair out stage on this one...

I do most of my bone based animation outside of Max, but I do use Max for limb based animation and there is a 'bug' or 'feature' with that which may be affecting you.

Your shoulders are possibly the top of the arm chain, and as they dont move are not chained to another limb? I find that the top limb in a chain is often '3dsmaxxed' and moves about with it's own free will (but very little intelligence).

To resolve this you could, if this is your problem, chain the shoulder limbs to the chest.

thanks andy, but his shoulder bones are already attached to his chest bone. i also tried removing the shoulder bones completely and linking the upper arm bones to the chest bone... but the problem was still there!! how??
its kinda as if somehow the movement of his upper arm bone is affecting the chest bone...
say if i move both his arms downward. his left shoulder goes down.. and the right one goes up!
its strange because his legs work perfectly, and they are set up pretty much identically to the arms. and his hip bones dont move... (hip bones are attached to the main parent bone)
eg:

[head]
|_ _ _ _ [arm]
|
| [spine]
|\ [hip]
^| [leg]
^[parent bone]

hope my sucky drawing makes sense.
[edit](parent bone is the one next to the hip)

I guess you are using an .x exporter? I have 3 for Max and they all have their own quirk as to what they do not like. When all else fails it's time to export in .3ds and convert to .x using Deep Exploration or 3D Exploration.

I'm not sure of exactly where I got all the exporters from, but i'll MSN them over to you if you like, they're all freeware: Panda; Microsoft X export from the DX-SDK; and some other misc exporter I found on the net.

well, i managed to find a compiled version of microsoft's .x 3dsmax exporter... but for some reason when i export my dude 3dsmax crashes. i also found another freeware .x exporter (by effectware).. the exported model looks nice but for some reason on the export dialog the animation checkbox is disabled, hence i get no animation.

sorry this message should be in some other forum... but i guess its still related to dbpro...

well im pretty certain now that the problem is with my exporter... i looked at the panda exporter version and noticed its for 3dsmax v4.2-6.0... since i only have v4.0, maybe thats whats causing panda to stuff up. ill update max sometime today... (fingers crossed...)

i shall post a message about .x exporters in the 3d forum, there must be others out there...

It is an export related problem. I'll send you mine my MSN is: [email protected]

I have nearly 50 DBP contacts now, but as long as you aren't called Mike I should be able to treat you as an individual.
