Hello everyone, I've just downloaded and installed DBP on my Windows 8 laptop and cannot get it to run. I've seen that multiple people seem to have this problem, though in different ways. In this thread - http://forum.thegamecreators.com/?m=forum_view&t=203116&b=1 - I saw more or less my problem (I attempt to open the program and nothing appears to happen, and I can't run it as administrator and troubleshooting does not work), except that 1) a proccess DID show up in Task Manager, one for each time I attempted to open the program, and 2) I restarted, and shut down and boot up again, which did not help. I noticed in some other cases that people got an error for not having DX9.0c installed. I have installed this from the file stored by these forums and it did not help.

This is a very serious problem as I have a lot of plans for this program. Please help!

Move the DBPro folder out of program files and put it somewhere else.

If you are on Windows 8.1 which you have not indicated...

you need this

Else, tell us more...

Where did you download your DX 9.0c from?

Did you restart yet?

Good Luck!

Thanks for the responses.

"Move the DBPro folder out of program files and put it somewhere else."
Nice idea but no dice, didn't work.

"If you are on Windows 8.1 which you have not indicated..."
Actually I downloaded it at some point but did not get around to installing it AFAIK... Mostly because I don't know where it downloaded to. If I keep having issues I'll try to install it and then check out your link.

"Did you restart yet?"
I would hope so XD It took several days for this thread to appear on the forums (Edit: actually not, according to the post dates... my bad). Anyways as I said in my first post, yes I did, as well as a complete shutdown and bootup.

8.1 installs via the store...

Let us know where you are at with DBPro, did you install the latest upgrades?

Okay I installed W8.1 last night, took forever and finished it off this morning. Nice of them to add a button for Start now...

Followed the link indicated above that I would need if I were running W8.1, and wound up at this page:
http://www.digitalzenith.net/
...and my browser tells me the page is unavailable. Help? Alternate link for whatever it is I'm supposed to download (which I'm assuming is the Synergy Editor)?

"Let us know where you are at with DBPro, did you install the latest upgrades?"
No, didn't install anything but DarkBasic Pro itself yet. Unless someone thinks it's a good idea, I'll hold off on that stuff until I get the basic program working.

The first step in debugging compatibility is to check for and install the relevant updates. If you're using windows 8.1 then you absolutely need to install the updates.

This is the link you gave me before; there don't seem to be any links in the posts (read the whole thread again), other than the dude's signature, which leads here, which says this:
"Latest download:
http://www.digitalzenith.net (2.45Mb)"
...which is the link my browser says is unavailable. Help? Better link?

Okay so I need to install updates... Where can I find them? I see all kinds of extras on the front page, and some expensive enhancement packs, but I'm doubting these are the updates spoken of...

http://apps.microsoft.com/windows/en-gb/app/prototype-primer-deep-red/832033ed-5936-41ef-b8a2-c3f38061208d

Get this if you really are struggling... it is in my signature on the Windows Store... Designed to assist you in installing DBPro and its plug-ins on Windows 8.1, My product just to be clear about that

If you looked at the DBPro page and did not read Downloads...

http://www.thegamecreators.com/?m=view_product&id=2000&page=upgrades

and here...

http://forum.thegamecreators.com/?m=forum_view&t=209135&b=1

Look at the right side for a red Download button under the first post

Hope that helps...

Have you got DirectX 9.0c as well?

Thanks for the primer suggestion, seems interesting at first glance. I\'ll most likely have a look.

I saw the Upgrade section in Downloads but it seemed to be for upgrading older versions to the latest one (which I downloaded), so I thought not to get it. Anyways I just upgraded, and while it DID have an effect, the program still does not work. At first, I got an infinite loop of notifications that forced me to restart. It looked like this:
http://imageshack.com/a/img822/9361/pcea.png

Then, as suggested, I ran it as administrator. Success! I put in my email and activated the product. Everything looks great, the editor itself is open... However, there is a dialog box ontop of it that says, \"This application is being run in compatibility mode. Please disable this feature and restart the application.\" When I click OK, it closes. When I open the program without selecting as-administrator, the same thing happens. I didn\'t assign compatibility settings and don\'t know how to remove their supposed existence... All I get when going to \"Troubleshoot compatibility\" is options for adding compatibility settings. Any suggestions?

\"Look at the right side for a red Download button under the first post\"
D\'oh! I totally would not have looked there, thanks.
*downloads and installs* ...Holy crap! It works, and looks exactly like the editor opened by \"Launch.exe\" that asks about compatibility. Do I not need to worry about it because I have Synergy Editor? Seems kinda suspicious but if it does all the same stuff...

\"Have you got DirectX 9.0c as well?\"
Yes, from the source I indicated above.

Awesome!

...So I read most of your primer last night and it was very nice. Only thing is... it suggested a ton of add-ons that are pretty pricey when you put them all together. I'm not sure if I have the money for all that just now. I'm a competent modeler so I would hope to be able to make assets of my own, but it would be good to have working assets to compare my work against. And then a lot of stuff like the physics plugins sound vital for 3D game environments. Is there any way to get uh, free stuff that would stand in its place?

Thank you!

There are in fact a whole host of free Plug-Ins on the forum, for Physics you actually have a built in ODE Engine [Open Dynamics Engine] which is handy for basic physics interactions, and also useful for collisions which nobody really thinks to mention you could also use what everyone says and that is Sparky\'s which you can look for and also have a fish around my Repository http://www.akaneaya.com/tgcforumrepository/ in the DarkBit Archive...

There are quite a lot of free plug-ins around here I believe there is a thread for it too...

I am almost done with an update to PRIMER which will pave the way for me to work on PROTOTYPE, which will introduce the paid Plug-ins including the included ones... [Included in DGS]

Did you not notice DGS? it includes Dark Physics which is very capable and easy to use... DGS is a good beginner pack to start with for DBPro...

I hope I can help further, if I can, just shout out

Ah that's good to hear! I think I'm actually going to delay my DarkBasic adventures for a bit more modding in another engine but I fully intend to return, when I have time to read all the necessary threads and such.

I didn't get DGS, can't remember if I noticed it before reading the primer. Got the free with ads version of DBPro... It looks like a nice collection, if I had lots of money to throw around I think the decision would be easy. I may look into it at some point.

Fortunately DGS is affordable...

http://www.thegamecreators.com/?m=view_product&id=2125

------ $ Dollar € Euros £ Sterling
Price: $49.99 €36.99 £30.99

It is very useful to start with this pack, just remember there may be tax charges on top of these prices depending on where you are located, as I am within the UK this is a Value Added Tax [VAT] of 20%...

Still compared to the individual costs this is peanuts

Looking forward to seeing you around in future! and once again, thank you! keep an eye out for my next project somewhere near the end of April!

Hope you can help.

1. Placed DB PRO in CC Drive
2. Installed Directx9C
3. Installed Synergy Editor for W8
4. I have Windows 8.1 fully patched

But I get this error

Failed to 'CFileBuilder::ConstructEXE::LockResource'

Any ideas ?

I am guessing this is because the app was already compiled and run, check to see if it is running already and close it...

If not, can you show me a screenshot? only include what you want me/us to see...

Is that WPX7 I see there

One of your other icons looks like a defrag icon, are you defragging your HDD while trying to compile? I think it might be locking any write operations to the HDD, try turning it off...

EDIT

Oh, I just spotted that you have externalise all DLL's turned on, My programs would not run when I enabled this option, try turning it off...

Tried turning Defrag off, it was off last night when I tried DBPro for the first time in Windows 8.

I have changed the flag in the Compiler folder, Setup.ini file as below, from NO to YES. Still no joy.

[SETTINGS]
TextLanguage=English

[EXCLUSIONS]

[NOEXCLUSIONS]
nexdll1=ConvMD2.dll
nexdll2=ConvMD3.dll
nexdll3=DBProVectorsDebug.dll
nexdll4=ConvMDL.dll
nexdll5=Conv3DS.dll
nexdll6=ConvX.dll
nexdll7=dbprospritesdebug.dll
nexdll8=dbprotextdebug.dll
nexdll9=dbprolightdebug.dll
nexdll10=dbprobasic2ddebug.dll

[DIRECTIVES]
RemoveSafetyCode=Yes
SafeArrays=Yes
LocalTempFolder=Yes
ExternaliseDLLS=Yes

I am convinced this is to do with DLLs, but all this worked fine in Windows 7 ?? any other ideas ?

BTW some basic programs compile... if that helps..

I thought you were DracoAstreus lol

Yeah moving it disconnects the registry data... I see you are on Windows 8 as well... Do a fresh install and apply the updates and then copy over the Win8 Editor, if stuck I cover everything you need to do in my app in my sig, just click the Download image to go direct to the store page...

Just search for it online and place in the same folder as your project...
