Map scape (by Evolved) is one of the best ones - it's awesome, and it's free!
You can check it out at his site: http://www.evolved-software.com

I've also been using mapscape lately, much better than 3dws. Just save your map before you run a dbpro project! It causes the editor to crash.

Don't forget about FPSC. It's free, and the source code is available for it too.

Thank you guys for the level editors but I have a question on MapScape. I checked the website and it and there is stuff like DBPro important, the program itself, and other .zip files. What do I download and is this program compatible with windows 8 not 8.1 but 8. Also Mobiius, my games aren't FPS games, mine are like mario and sonic type games.

The 'import' folders are examples showing how you load (import) files produced with mapscape into DBPro or DarkGDK - I can see how you got confused, it's not short for 'important'
The actual program is 'Map Scape.zip'

Does that mean you're looking for a 2d level editor? If so, MapScape won't be much help, that's a 3d map editor
I'm sure there are others, but the only 2d editor I know about is one I saw a while back by ShellfishGames, which looked pretty interesting!

To be honest though, I think that might be more of a complete engine than just an editor, and I'm not sure if it's designed for top-down games only - could be worth checking out if you're looking for 2d though

It doesn't matter what kind of games you're making. You'd just be using the level editor. You dont have to use it to create a full game.

Blender is easy if you don't give up the first half an hour, and is so powerful as 3DMax . It export .x and so many other formats.

There are lots of video tutorials in youtube. There are good foros for blender lovers where you can find all the help you need, and you can use all the models exported from Blender.

You will need to install the addon for .x

I have uploaded the add-on needed (let me know if it is the right one)

You will need to copy the folder to the following location

*ps I am using blender 2.70

\blender-2.70-windows64\2.70\scripts\addons\

Now lets enable it

File / User Preference / Addons (search) DirectX

"import-Export DirectX import" This is what the addon should be named when you search for it let me know if it is not

@wattywatts How do people learn without some guidance I say blender as it is the most easiest way to learn modeling etc there are a ton of youtube video's for tutorials

Also how can I use blender as a level editor? Do I need to do special things or swine thing because my games have special zones and portals (like opening a door, go on vines, go to another place in the level, etc.). I am sorry of this is too much but I am just really curious and confused about making levels.

What you do is model your scene buildings roads etc and export the entire thing as one big .x file any textures you assign to the object make sure is in the same folder
