You might want to check out the Multisync plugin

You need to use the red download button in the bottom right hand corner of the post, because the other links don't seem to work anymore...

The code never bothered me anyway...

yes and yes. for basic to intermediate stuff, multisync will work fine (and, don't bother with the built-in multiplayer commands).

Look at the multisync examples and read the documentation on how to use it.

If you are new to networking games, then I suggest you read the following article for an introduction on the different techniques used.

After that, I suggest you read how the Source engine handles multiplayer, since that's a prime example for FPS games today.
