I'm suddenly getting problems viewing various web pages, e.g. facebook, bbc and various other sites (TGC is fine though ). The problem pages all look something like the image below. What's gone wrong? Any ideas?

1: You are using Internet Explorer

2: The issue looks like the .css files (which define the layout and style of websites) isn't loading propperly. I don't know what could cause that though

Yes, I guess it's something like that - but what?

I've tried rebooting to no avail. My wife's laptop is unaffected. I've experienced this sort of thing before but in the past it has only been facebook that's affected.

Irritating.

Try CTRL+F5 to force a drop of cache and reload from source...

Thanks for the suggestion, I'll try that next time. The problem seems to have resolved itself while I went into the kitchen to prepare some food.

I've had this problem with FF, still not sure how to fix it, normally I just reload the page a few times and it ends up working

I have also had this problem with Chrome. Very odd, eh? Indeed, reloading one, or two, or three, or ten times tends to help.

I remember using school computers that inexplicably wouldn't load the CSS for Wikipedia, ever.

I've had this happen before. As pointed out its as if the CSS wasn't loaded and in my case each time it happened it was due to a very poor connection. As if the page loading was timing out before I got everything (even though you'd think I'd receive the CSS first).

But refreshing the cache is always a first step when something looks funky.

I can never remember how to do that. I suspect Windows calls it something else.

Edit Do you mean clear the browsing history? If so I usually try that. Can't recall whether or not I did that yesterday just before it all worked. I usually do that at least once a day anyway.

Edit2 No that doesn't fix it. The problem has just started again on both my and my wife's laptop simultaneously and I tried clearing the cache () to no avail . I suspect it has something to do with pages loading slowly but why that should matter I've no idea. The problem has got worse recently and we're in a very slow broadband area here.

Edit3 Ok problem has now gone away on both machines and, interestingly, the pages concerned now load almost instantly whereas when we have the problems they load, albeit partially, very slowly. Could this be a problem at the Internet provider end - a dodgy output server or something like that?

www.refreshyourcache.com

Edit: Never mind, that's to clear the entire cache. This page says ctrl+F5 is the key (no pun intended)

Except it doesn't tell you what it does. It says it does a Force Refresh - but what's that? How does that differ from the usual IE/Tools/Safety/Delete browsing history thing?

Force refresh will reload the page, ignoring/overwriting any currently cached files from that site.

Deleting your history won't do anything, but deleting IE's temp files could.

Thanks. Another magic key combination to remember then.

It'll be interesting to see if that works next time I encounter the problem. I still suspect a problem at the server or hub end of things though.
