I'm starting add server features to my games and at the moment i'm just using servers offered by other TGC members, but I was wondering if any had any recommendations or advice for using a server hosting service.

The web seems awash with server hosting services, but they're not really aimed at what I want.

I'm just looking to host a few SQL databases and run a handfull of small PHP scripts.

Any advice would be good.

For that, get a simple Linux server with MySQL and PHP in a shared environment...

You'll probably want a VPS.
Digital Ocean is a good hosting solution I believe
