I always knew what FAT was. Especially since one of my Hard-drives got a corrupted FAT file, and couldn't find my files anymore.

Big question. Would the CD-R ISO formats be considered a derivitave of FAT and claimed by M$?

25¢ per disc is a lot considering I've gotten them blank for under 10¢ per disc.

Basically Microsoft is going to start charging companies to use the FAT file system which has been around for decades. You can compare it to the person who invented the wheel claiming royalties everytime someone else manufactures a wheel. Quite ludicrous really.

Or at least that's what I thought they were going on about, I could be way off though.

Exeat that's my take on it too.

If they were going to enforce the patent they shouild have done it before so many companies began to depend on the format. Of course then the companies would have created another format wouldn't they? So I guess it made good business sense for M$ to bide the time.

I'm sure that the $250,000 won't be too much for SONY, Maxell, FUJI, TDK or Imation. The price of blanks discs shouldn't go up too much f at all. But for the smaller players and startups it is a significant burden.

Sort of like what SCO is pulling, except Microsoft has a bit more standing and they're asking for less exorbitant fees. Still ridiculous though.

I would think there are enough people that prepared to save the 25p and format media themselves that it would be available unformated or pay the money so you don't have to bother. I would be more worried about having to pay more for the next device you buy that uses fat.

I wounder if there are patents in the Uk or if we will be unaffected.

well were to start. this is not about you paying M$ .25c ever time you buy a disc or CD.

1) disc and most media files has normel liner memorys i.e. it starts some were in the memorys and after X bites it ends. FAT meens that the data is dot about the memory and the FAT system go`s and finds it.

2) this must be a new becos Patents can`t last over 20 years after that you do`t have to pay a penne for uesing the Patent so you can ues the old 1976 FAT system.

this just a way M$ is try to ues to make money and not one of m$ is going to kill computing things. so if you pay M$ for this you are to bum to make you own memory system or to lasy to ues the normel liner one.

I beleive that it is something along the lines of 75 years after the death of the primary creators of a patented object. Not to mention the fact that the patent can be extended via large sums o' money.

The CD storage format (ECMA-130) is an open standard now but was originally developed by Philips.

Good to nkow that it's an open standard. I hope that means that CDs and Linux are safe.

I'd bet that on the list of patents cited, there are only one or two that directly pertain to the licensing scheme.

I'd also wager that the patent office didn't do a proper search for prior art.

It was widely rumoured that M$ routinely ripped many ideas from
other dosses while creating it's disk operating system including CP/M, Atari DOS and Apple DOS.

Still the big guys will pay because if it's bogus it'd be like money in the bank.

FATs (file allocation tables) where used in disk and tape file systems WAY before Billy boy crawled from under his rock, even the Sinclair microdrives (endless tapes) used a form of allocation table to tell the system if the next bit of tape was empty or held data, also notice the conditions at the bottom of the page, they reserve the right to alter any contract they have with users as they see fit , only a twice inbred retard would sign a contract with a clause like that in it , "just pay this $2,000,000 surcharge we added last night....or we sue for breach "
