Hi everyone. As you all know it is not easy promoting your game. We're out of development for Sudoku In Space (except for adding on more puzzles and an awesome story line) and we're now into marketing mode and trying new and different things.

I'd like to start a thread here of tips and tricks for us all to contribute to. That way I hope the community will grow and help each other grow. As mall indie developers we really need to lean on each other for support.

One of the easiest things we can do for each other is simply download, share, and review each others games. If you don't like someone's game then write them directly and don't give a nasty review as that can really kill an app in its early stages. I try to do this for as many of you as I can and many of you reciprocate and I truly truly appreciate it.

One thing we're trying out is joining some app review exchange groups on Facebook. I just started today so I can't share much as far as results go, but I will later.

Here are the groups I've found that look good (or come recommended by friends):
Facebook
https://www.facebook.com/groups/reviewmyapp/
https://www.facebook.com/groups/aareview
https://www.facebook.com/groups/369574626514993/
Google Plus
https://plus.google.com/communities/110898192675994674517
https://plus.google.com/communities/104717782253208662719

Also remember that Google weighs app rankings HEAVILY on how many +1 shares the app has, so make sure to ask folks to do that.

As many of you know, I'm also exploring other stores:
http://forum.thegamecreators.com/?m=forum_view&t=212098&b=41
Unfortunately, the article I point to seems to have numbers that may be too good to be true because they are counting "downloads" which may never be installed or cancelled. So we're getting really nice numbers that are unfortunately not worth so much. However, we're seeing a tripling in our number of daily downloads (which isn't a lot). So these other stores are doing something! We're also planning to release on SlideMe in the next week or so, I just have to make some modifications.

Finally, I'm hoping we can also talk about App Store Optimization (ASO) here.
This is an odd subject and I'm only just beginning to learn it.
We did ASO for our keywords on iTunes and for a couple of searches we rank pretty high. Unfortunately they are searches with low traffic. One of the searches (how to play sudoku) ranks us #2 (because there are only 2 apps listed for that!). Unfortunately, simpler searches which most people will use are already dominated, so finding keyword combinations that are relevant to our app is turning out to be quite difficult. We're also considering trying to add some keywords to the app's title on iTunes, but that's a challenge.

Next up is "ASO" for Google Play. This is a challenge too. Google uses the description to search for keywords. It is said that your keywords should appear 3-5 times in your description, but never more than 5. I've read on some sites that adding keywords to your title may help, but I think this may not be so true anymore since even if you do a direct search for, say, Sudoku In Space, you'll find us far down the list (but we're on the move!). What Google seems to rely on more is link building, downloads, install lifetime, and g+ shares. For link building what you need to do is get a link to the play store on various websites, so when you post here or other forums make sure to post a link directly to Google Play. Also, if anyone wants to put links to our games on their site I will do the same for you on our site.

So let's hear it folks! What are your experiences, resources, and tips on this WIDE topic?

EDIT:
Almost forgot!
There's also a great tool for spreading the word through Twitter. It's called Indie Developer Retweet Group.
http://www.innovatty.com/twitter/IDRTG/index.php?page=home
You sign up and retweet other's tweets and they retweet your (must be submitted through there form). The point system is pretty straightforward. We've gained 60+ followers in just a couple days through that (mostly other indies) and had quite a bit of retweets done (20 before shutting it off to save points). There's also the hastag, #GameDev which is also retweeted by a bot and gains us 1-5 followers each time.

I would suggest anyone with a website could add a section on third party game reviews. For each game:

* Write one review, and let all others copy it (to save effort)
* When you copy a review, change a few words before publishing, especially in the title (unless it is just the game name)
* Include a link to the game on the marketplace(s)
* Include links to the other review pages

This web of links should massively improve your Google rankings for your games, and ultimately on the marketplaces that checking links.

You don't need to link this game section from the front of your site if you are getting links from outside.

I'm on board for this.
I would definitely put a review section on my website for AppGameKit content.

If anyone wants their completed game featured, I will post it. I will work on the review section this weekend.
You can send over a small review and the links to the pics you want shown - two at most please.
I don't have the bandwidth to host your pics but an embed should be fine.
I'm using godaddy to host things. Send everything to joeb@kg2entertainment.com.

As you are considering please keep in mind my motto: "Keeping Games, Games". You can read more about this on my About Us page at http://www.kg2entertainment.com/aboutUs.html.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------

I have been invited to a small business meeting this month to talk about my business so this is a start.

I also have another engagement this month that my wife set up to meet with this person that markets apps. This is a great opportunity and it is a great chance to get some exposure.

One thing I'm learning is you need to network, network and network. My wife does this quite well, and she is giving me an opportunity to talk about what I do to over 100 of her network partners.

Another thing you want to do is attend some chamber of commerce meetings where small businesses attend. Find the ones that is all about connecting with other small business in your area. They give you a chance to introduce yourself and your business. That's how I got my first speaking engagement later this month from a person I met there.

But, Naphier is right, we have a great community here so we need to be the first to support each other, especially by downloading each others games. I try to make it a point to visit the Showcase often so that when someone releases their game I download it and try it out.

Meh Google making it hard to get anywhere for the small guys!
Quote: "Excessive link exchanges ("Link to me and I'll link to you") or partner pages exclusively for the sake of cross-linking"

I don't think any of us will be doing anything "excessive", but I wonder if it might be best to do these in the form of an actual review. I don't mind doing this on my blog, but it's best when I have content readily available.

For Napland Games we make a press page for every game so that reviewers can easily find information, images, and links useful in reviewing the game. So that's what I'll plan to do, write blog posts that are reviews of others games. And I'd suggest that is the best option for "trade".

I was originally thinking I could build a page of "other great games" with a short blurb and links to each game, but it looks like that might be bad.

It looks like linking to one another will be detrimental.
BUT you can still share review content and link them to the marketplace app page.

The reason for sharing review content is to take the hard work out of this exercise. Most initiatives fail because they are too time-consuming. Something is needed to make it as simple as possible.

Imagine 6 people writing one review each and sharing. That's 30 minutes each instead of 3 hours each.

Of course if you can write all 6 reviews for your contribution, then that's even better

Yeah, I'm seeing why Vambleer harps on about the importance of press kits so much. We make one for each of our games so that reviewers have easy access to material and details on the game. Many reviewers even cut and paste a lot of our own text and simply add only a paragraph or two of their own and give it a rating of some sort.
So in venturing forth on a link-building / review blog exchange I'd highly suggest that anyone interested set up press kits for their games.
[href=dopresskit.com]dopresskit.com[/href]
It's an easy install via PHP and just takes uploading some images to a server as well as videos, and editing an XML file.
We modify ours a bit because there are sections we don't use, but all in all it is very easy.
You can see all of our press kits here:
www.naplandgames.com/press.html

I'll be personally writing the reviews for anyone who trades with me. I'm certain I can write a review of a mobile game in less than 30 minutes, especially if supplied with images and details on the game.

Just wanted to make a quick mention that we've been featured in the #1 slot on SlideME.org
So far over the past 10 days we've seen over 700 downloads (fewer registered installs). Much better than Google Play!

It would be awesome if there was a list of useful threads like this one. Because we will forget that they exist when we need them.

And thanks for sharing

I've had a domain - www.androidreviews.co.uk - for a couple of years now and still haven't done anything with it. :s

I'll put a little effort into turning it into an honest indie review site for us to use. It'll be another place to add details of your games, with screenshots and whatever links you like and will allow other users to leave reviews and vote on others reviews etc.

@CJB - Very cool of you. Let me know when it's up and if you have any apps you'd like me to review on my blog.

If you wanted a head start, I'm sure the people involved in ADG wouldn't mind transferring the site over. It was a great idea, but time got the better of us. Now is probably a better point to do something like this, with AppGameKit being a more mature development platform. We let people write up their own games and then published them.

Edit: We had quite a few games in the end...

I've had a look at my site, and I had already got quite a bit of the functionality working so just need a few apps to post up for testing. Naphier, mind if I post up a few of yours? I can grab the details from your press pages

Thanks.

Wordspionage is up on the site now. Please take a look and let me know what you think. Try and add a review and a "Thumbs up" rating. It all appears to work from here, but I'd like a few testers if you don't mind.

The "Developer's" tab has a contact form where devs can contact me with any apps they'd like posted.

I haven't published any AppGameKit apps for you to review (yet!) - watch this space!

Cool. I see Sudoku In Space too, thanks!
I upvoted both to see if it sticks for you.
It appears to save on my end after reloading the page and such.
Cheers!

My blog post detailing our "Adventures in Alternative App Markets" is now live.
I hope it helps some of in making your decision on what stores to work with.
Last weekend we were fortunate enough to get picked up by SlideME as a featured app. We saw a decent boost from that, but no great boom. Hopefully we can convince them to do it again after the version 2 release.

Here's a good tidbit. The guy we did a podcast with is opening up to everyone to see if he can help promote your game via an interview. Check it out here:
