I only do a little programming for fun, not to make money. I can broadcast the apps that I write and then play them on my Tesco hudl, in my own house. I would like to be able to send them to my grandchildren for their parents to install on their own hudls. Is this possible or, preferably, easy?

Yes, there is an apk builder in the IDE now or there is an online apk builder.

Build your apk and then email it to whoever. They may need to change their settings to accept apps that have not come from google play.

One way of getting the apk to family and friends when you have built it as Matty H suggested, is to sign up to drop box, you then drop apk in the box and send link to friends so they can download it straight to there android device.

i also find dropbox very useful for testing apk`s quickly.

Thanks for all the help. Matty H, you said, "Yes, there is an apk builder in the IDE now or there is an online apk builder". I can't find it in the IDE. I am using version 108.24, any ideas?

Where would I find the online apk builder? LiamBradbury's, "Step by Step guide to creating a working .APK file" or perhaps easter bunny's, "Automate 2.0 (AGK TIER 1 INSTANT DEPLOY to APK)" or somewhere else?

I am really in need of a Dummies Guide or simpler level so any advice on where to start would be welcome

Hi Rob

Whick version of AppGameKit are you using? If it's version 1 then I don't think there is an apk builder and if so you could look at this thread in the forum:
http://forum.thegamecreators.com/?m=forum_view&t=206200&b=41

you need to be logged into the game creators website and click the this page bit.

Version 2 does have the apk option but not at my computer so can only guess it is in the file menu.

Hope this help

Hi Scotty

To upgrade my version of AppGameKit I downloaded and ran AppGameKit Windows Installer v108.24. Does this mean that I am running version 1 and if so should I be OK with Paul's "One click deploy"?

Hi Rob

I think that is version 1 and that is what Paul's "one click deploy" was made for. Can't do no harm in trying it out, so give it a go.
It says you get the apk file back which is what you needed.

Why not use V2? V1 does NOT produce the APK.

Just to clarify: V1 absolutely CAN produce an APK, but you either need to compile up the player with your app's byte-code yourself (look for T1 publishing here for info), or use the online "One Click Deploy" method, or use the Automate tool.

V2 makes the whole process Uber easy with an "Export to Android APK" option in the IDE.

Hi JimHawkins,

Does V2 not mean the same as Tier 2 ie writing in C++? I did write using C in the 1990s, on a Mac, but never went on to C++.

I am just looking for the simplest way to drop my apps on to my grandchildrens, hudls. I can have them brought to my home or email them.

V2 is just version 2 and not the same meaning as tier 2.
Version 2 has both tier's like version 1.

Once you get the APK file you could email it to your grandchildren.

Hi Rob - As Spotty1973 says, V2 is the alpha versions with loads of new goodies.

Oops - I meant Scotty1973.

here is the link for the online .apk builder used for v1.
v2 was a kickstarter project, some people get accces to v2 alpha.

u just compile and send media folder to zip with windows.
keystore file (your signature) is optional and used for google play store.

I followed the link given above by Markus and successfully received my APK file. I then emailed it to myself as an attachment and opened the email using my hudl (my wife bought it for me in the mistaken belief that I would easily produce apps for our grandchildren).

However, when I try to download the attachment the hudl tells me, "There is no installed app that can open this attachment Try downloading an appropriate app from Android Market". Any ideas anybody?

You might need to do a couple of things:
First, make sure that the devices allow apps from unknown sources. This can usually be found in the tablet's settings under security, but some manufacturers like to change the location so you might need to Google it for the hudl.
Second, if that alone doesn't work then you might have better luck with a file explorer app like ES File Explorer. You'd have to save the attachment to the device (I usually use the downloads directory). I apparently have no idea how to save an email attachment to the device, so you just might have to use a dropbox link. Alternatively, you could plug the device it to a USB port and transfer the APK that way. I'd try this first before doing dropbox to make sure that the devices aren't blocking APK installation in some mysterious way (no idea how they would do that as the APK files are the only way to install android apps).

Thanks Naphier, I took your advice and plugged the hudle into my PC's USB port and transfered the APK. I can't get the APK to run on the hudl but I now have a hudl user guide so I need to do a bit of reading there.

I'll be back if I get stuck again.

As I promised, I am stuck and have come back again. I have copied one of my apps onto my hudl and it runs well, just as good as on my PC.

However, it has no sound. On this app there are only 2 sounds, an explosion and a failed sound. I looked elsewhere in this forum and came across the advice, "my notes about wave files for android:
sound must be wave (PCM) 16 bits , 2 channels (stereo) sampling rate 44.1 KHz". I tried using Audacity to set my 2 wav files to 16 bits, stereo and 44.1 KHz and I think that I managed but still no sounds

Any ideas?

Check your audio files with:

http://forum.thegamecreators.com/?m=forum_view&t=212590&b=41

Check the case of the file names. Android is case-sensitive.

You need to explicitly set the Audacity Export settings, or it will use 32-bit FP samples.

Thanks again Jim. At the moment I just have a voice saying, "Explosion" and, "Oh no, failed", but I'll follow your Audacity advice when I am getting my sound effects going.

By the way - 9-bit mono should be fine for sound effects.
